SL/R230: Transmission selector shaft seal

Transmission selector shaft seal
Has anyone successfully replaced the transmission selector shaft seal, tried to replace it to stop a nasty leak but could not get the shaft out due to insufficient clearance against trans tunnel. I removed the transmission crossmember but only got it to drop 1/2 inch which was not enough to clear the tunnel.
If anyone has some insight on what I need to remove to drop transmission further down would be greatly appreciated...

When I removed the transmission on my CLK550, with the exhaust and flex disc removed, the engine/transmission would really pivot downward. You'll need a transmission jack to support it if you go this route. I'm not sure that's going to give you enough clearance, but it's worth a try. Also, you may want to remove the transmission fluid cooling lines to keep from stressing them. If that doesn't do it, then you'll need to drop the transmission. And at that point, it would just be a matter of removing the bolts holding the torque converter to the flywheel and the transmission to the engine bell housing. Of course you should drain the fluid before doing this to prevent spills - sometimes the torque converter pulls out and then you get a pretty good fluid leak.
