SL/R230: R230 Clock Spring

The clock spring is the electrical connection between the mechanical movements of the steering wheel and the electrical functions controlled from/by the wheel. All those pushbuttons on your steering wheel--e.g., horn, radio controls, nav, temp, telephone controls, and steering wheel angle, etc.--are connected from the steering wheel to their various downstream electrical components by the "clock spring," which is a long ... really long ... ribbon cable.

R230 Steering Clockspring
Hey Heatwave,
MANY thanks for helping educate me with the CS component of the R230 steering wheel... IF - IF you are willing to advise me with an insane project that I am undertaking .. I would be grateful..
I have a pristine 2003 SL500 R230 (currently with 8400 total miles on it) and have decided to try and personally customize it.. I have installed the AMG P030 optional performance package on it along - with a Quaife LSD, and AMG Black Series 19" wheels with super sticky rally tires... My next steps are headers, cleaned up exhaust, and catback pipes with a flashed ECU... While I am doing these crazy 'fixes" I am trying to configure my old Nard steering wheel to the car. I have an old donor R230 wheel to cut down to the base for the female spine to fit and intend to coble up a small box to accommodate the two computer access buttons and attach somehow to the Nardi's mounting base..(Yeah I know ..NO airbag, phone, and radio access ..along with insurance concerns..)
I think you may be NavAir also so I could CCFL about those items - at my age having raced TDs, 120s, 356s/911s and Lotuses without them..
Having bored you with this shaggy dog story.. when the time comes, are you willing to help steer me though the "Clock Spring mine field" and beat the system ?
Thanks in advance,
Ron Martin

Sorry, Mate ... include me out: my technical skills are far too deficient for me to mess with MB (or other) clock springs.
On a whim, I searched "clock springs" on You Tube and found numerous vids showing people splitting the clock spring gadget and spooling out the wiring ... it's pretty much what I imagined and it's definitely over my pay grade. I was a PE major ... stringing up a new basketball net is about the limit of my manual skills.
I appreciate your wanting to mount the Nardi wheel on your R230 ... oughta look great.
