SL/R230: buzzing sound, inside around steering column

buzzing sound, inside around steering column
after the car warms up, about 5 minutes, there is a little buzzing sound around the steering column or gauge cluster. I've grabbed and touched every piece of plastic around the steering and the sound did not change.
almost sound like a bad speedometer cable (in the older cars), from inside the gauge cluster. I've opened the hood and with the engine running, no buzzing.
any ideas would be appreciated. steering, ABC pump, etc?
