Roof Flap Repair
Took my wife's car to get gas today with the roof down. While filling up noticed the notorious roof flap was loose. MB replaced it once under warranty so this was not old plastic. Attached photos shows how easy it is to repair once and for all. First step is to gather a few tools and some thin strong wire. I used aircraft safety wire because it's strong but easy to work with. Open roof all the way and then start to close it until the trim opens. Then stop. There is a black screw that is hidden unless the trim is open. remove the black screw. There is also a hidden 8mm bolt holding the trim piece on. Open the flap and you will feel the bolt. You can also lean down and use a flashlight to see it. Just unloosen it, no need to remove it. Open the car door remove the brushed silver trim piece that covers the front of the piece with the flap. There are 4 screws. Make sure you note where you removed the 2 short and 2 long chrome screws from. There are 2 white plastic expansion inserts holding the trim piece on. Carefully lift up and remove the trim piece. Follow the attached photos to see how to repair with a small drill bit and safety wire. Hopefully the photos are self-explanatory. If the flap isn't broken, make a safety cord as seen in the last photo in case the plastic holders fail. Then you won't loose the flap. Because the plastic wasn't broken on one of the flaps, there isn't enough room for the safety wire. Good luck and be safe.
