Rear accumulator fails in cold start
My car has been sitting for 4 weeks of Maine winter and it was mild today so I decided to start it and exercise the ABC by driving it up and down my 700' driveway while I cycle the suspension height. As soon as I started it there was a very loud pop coming from the left rear wheel. Immediately thought the accumulator blew since I just had to replace the pulsation dampener. I confirmed it by checking the fluid level and it was down on the dipstick and it was perfect when I put it away. My 07 has 45K so I figure I will replace both accumulators.
I have several questions, did the cold contribute to the failure since the diaphragm was cold and had been static for a long time? Does the 07 use the same part#2203270115 as previous years.? Is replacement as simple as it appears, remove wheel well, bleed off pressure, R&R accumulator, check fluid level. The ABC fluid was just changed with new filter .

If it's like my '03 there is a small clamp with an 8mm nut on it that you need to remove. It holds the lines in place. Some references say it is 10mm but mine was 8mm. You can find some pics of the whole removal process of the accumulator in forum writeups.

You might try this website, and the two others that are tied into it:
http://www.hehlhans.de/sl55amg-abc1.htm#b1
It's in German, but your computer should be able to translate it in a few seconds. This is the best explanation I've seen regarding servicing the ABC system. Good luck, Mate.

Has anyone changed the accumulators on an 07 or later MY? After doing more research it appears that the part numbers for front and rear accumulators are different and both are different that the earlier years. It looks like they mount differently also. I would appreciate any input from someone who has changed them.

2018 SL550
Here is a link to when I did my 2008 SL550. First shown is the fronts, followed by additional posts about the rear. This was part of a larger thread that started with descriptions of how someone had done it on a 2003 SL55 with the earlier system.

Hope it helps.

That is exactly what I was looking for , thank you very much, nice write up and pictures. Where did you get the quick disconnect tools?

at 10 years, if one accumulator has already gone (the pulsation dampener one) then they are all about to go or have already gone. there are actually 2 in the rear valve block, one is a traditional accumulator and the other is a return line pulsation dampener. there is also an accumulator on the front valve block. you also don't need the quick disconnect tools to replace the rear accumulator. Just slide the thing out with all the lines still attached. This will save a boatload of time.

Before I go through the process of gaining access to the rear accumulator in order to replace it , I thought I would check out replacing the return pulsation dampener. I have looked both online and in my WIS program and I cannot find the part or anything about replacing it. I know that on the models up to 2006 it is mounted on the same rear valve block area as the pressure accumulator. Can anyone tell me where it is located on a 2007 SL550 .

I looked too and and can't find a return accumulator either. It appears that the newer models have eliminated the need for the return accumulator. I count only 3, the front and rear ones mounted on the valve block assemblies and the pulsation damper mounted on the ABC/steering pump itself.
Part numbers and Mounting is different on the newer R230's such as yours.
The R&I of the front and rear accumulators appears to be quite easy and easier than on the the older model '03-'06 such as mine.
I've attached the WIS instructions plus EPC parts list.
Good luck,
Bob

Thank you very much, I thought I was missing something. As it is I can't figure out the need for the return dampener
