1973 450SL question

I was working on my brake hose and i found one of my hose was ripped.
That hose connected with some component but i cant figure out what that is
Its located at back of the driver side, connected with fuel tank.
I took it out today, car still runs
The photos are attached, if you guys know what this is, can you tell me the name of this component and how this works?
