SL/R107: SL- 2 seat vs. 4 seat?

SL- 2 seat vs. 4 seat?
I'm new to the SL world and would like to learn more about them. I was a CLK500 owner a few years back but I would like to get into the SL's now.
The problem is the seats! We now have a little guy and he goes pretty much everywhere with us. I've seen a few SL's with rear seats, but I haven't yet figured out the rhyme or reason why some cars have the small rear seats. They look terribly small, but I don't think that's a problem for us. We don't intend on driving long distances and our son is currently 8 months old. Why do some of the SL's have rear seats? Are they an after market? Are they safe? Do they have seat belts? Will the car seat work with them? Does anyone own a 4 seater? There's currently a 380 sl on ebay (on that I'm going to bid on it) with 4 seats. It looks tight, but I would love to take my wife and son out for ice cream in that car! Looking for some info...

SL rear seats
I'm fairly new to the SL world as well, but from what I've been able to find is those rear seats were not OE. There is a company on EBay that sells them for around $550 I think. I was on the fence about adding them to my 560, but decided not to in order to retain the original look. In addition, they would have no practical use for my 26 and 29 year old children
Good luck.
Good luck.

The rear seats were an option on R107s in countries outside of North America. They do have seat belts. I have seen child seats used in them but no personal experience.
jjproduccts sells two versions http://www.jjproducts.net/jj_product...JumpSeats.html The folding model is a close match to originals. All R107s have the holes for attaching the seat belts.

It was an option in other markets but to my knowledge not for North American R107s. If you look at the link for jjproducts in post number three you will see a couple of aftermarket examples. The folding one is what the Euro/ROTW models look like.
Euro headlights can be fitted to any 107. Euro bumpers also. http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r-c107-sl-slc-class/ has many posts on DIY.

rear seats
Thx. I was told this car was emmissionized (if that's a word) external to MB...and it has these unique rear seats and the pin stripes are signed by the MB painter at the time. The car MSRP was $65530..trying to find out what I can about it

Pin stripes were applied by Dealers in North America not by MB. Like chrome wheels.
The word would be Federalized which means adding emissions controls, headlights, bumpers, etc. to meet US standards. During the heyday of grey market imports all of it or none might be done.
Not sure there were any left hand drive 560SL models other than North American as they were only marketed in North America, Australia and Japan.

Rear seat
Thank you for the feedback. My paperwork shows this car was ordered by a family that knew MB senior leadership in Germany and the rear seat was added as well as signing the leading edge of both front fender pinstripes. I'll keep looking.
