1981 500SL GRAY TITLE
purchased my first Mercedes, a gray title car billed out as an 81 500SL. it's badged as an AMG but it's been a chore checking everything out. the rear-end is not stock turning 3000+/- rpm at 70. headers are 4 into 2 into 1. it's a v8 but where in the heck is the motor number stamped on the engine itself?? regardless if it is or isn't it's been a blast to drive with only 48,000 original miles.
thanks henry

450SL
Engine number stamped into the top of the block behind left cylinder head. Picture here: http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r-c1...ml#post4311327
Those headers are standard on all LHD 107 500SLs.
Hard to prove AMG provenance. No records exist. There is an AMG site with lots of knowledge. http://www.mercedes-amg-classic.com/...wforum.php?f=5
