purchased my first Mercedes, a gray title car billed out as an 81 500SL. it's badged as an AMG but it's been a chore checking everything out. the rear-end is not stock turning 3000+/- rpm at 70. headers are 4 into 2 into 1. it's a v8 but where in the heck is the motor number stamped on the engine itself?? regardless if it is or isn't it's been a blast to drive with only 48,000 original miles.

Those headers are standard on all LHD 107 500SLs.

Hard to prove AMG provenance. No records exist. There is an AMG site with lots of knowledge. http://www.mercedes-amg-classic.com/...wforum.php?f=5

thank you for the information, am I correct that the engine displacement will follow behind the engine number say 5.0 but I am looking for 5.4 or 5.6 ?

I have never seen the displacement stamped into an engine on a 107.
