I'm looking at buying a 1981 380 SL that has 120K on the clock. Besides the timing chain issue what else should I be looking for? Do these engines last a long time, with preventative maintenance? The guy has a lot of records. Any help would be appreciated. If there is a forum thread that deals with this question please let me know.

Check it everywhere for rust!

my 82 380sl had 104,000 miles on the original chain, and yeah watch for rust though mine has none

I bought it and there is no rust anywhere. Timing was replaced by PO. Love it. Now I need to find an original Becker 612, Early Model, radio as there is a Panasonic CD/radio in there. I want a completely original look. Thanks for the input.

Nice. PO replaced the park bench bumpers with '72-'73 North American ones. Same as ROTW but with the bumper guards added.
