SL63 REAR BUMPER ON SL55

I have been doing research on installing the sl63 bumper on my sl55. I know many have done this but I am wondering what do you do about the back up sensors. Do I order a bumper with that option and everything connects? Any info would be appreciated.

Go to the dealership that has an SL63 that has the back up sensors...get the VIN...go to the MB parts department with the VIN and they can look up all the parts needed for the conversion including the back up sensors.

The trick is getting a good wrench that will do the bumper install and making sure the back up sensors work properly. Luckily, I didn't have that problem since my SL65 didn't have back up sensors.

PS In all honesty, the back up sensor option would be wasted on me.

also keep in mind that the back up sensors really have nothing to do with the bumpers (front or rear)... they are built into the impact strips which can easily be popped in and out

so basically its the same bumper for a given model, regardless of the sensors or not... here's the cool part, you might even be able to reuse the impact strip you have on your bumper currently (since to me it looks like the non-amg, 55, and 65 strips all look the same - i haven't seen to many 63 rear bumpers up close to tell, but it very well may).

don't rely on me though, as AMGFan said ur best bet is to find the VIN off a 63 and head over to the parts counter. have them also check the part numbers on the 55 and 63 impact strips to see if u can reuse yours... good luck and let us know what you find out!

Your theory is not going to work since the 63's don't have impact strips.

Benzo, the -06 bumpers have removable bumper strips, with the sensors or without,
but 07 and thru the 09s have no removable strip, that is all just molded in. so you have to have the whole bumper either with or w/out sensors.
Im working on a 08 bumper now and have to adapt the (03) sensors to it. Give me a few days and I may have a answer to this qusetion.

my bad, you guys are right i was thinking the older models (and my w211)

now that we're on the subject though, are the impact strips interchangable amongst the different trims of the pre 06 r230's?

From what I understand they are all the same.

The back up sensors are a major issue, when upgrading to a 09 rear bumper. The 09 models use different sensors with different clips in the bumper.

You need a good garage to get the job done, since they need to carefully remove the clips from the old bumper and put them into the new bumper. The clips need to be glued in.

It's a little tricky..., but it can be done. The back up sensors work (and look) perfectly on my 04 SL55 with a 09 SL63 bumper.

Not to go off topic but can the 09' front bumper, hood, and fenders fit 03'-2007' models? Just to make it the full conversion. Has anyone found a price for the sl63 rear bumper yet?

take the inner wheel well liners out, take all the screws out from under the bumper, and take all the side and back carpet out of the trunk so you can take off the screws and nuts from the inside of the trunk.

Sorry to revive an old thread but aside from modifying the parking sensors, do I just need the sl63 rear bumper and diffuser to install it on my 2003 SL500? I've seen mixed responses - some say you need a different reinforcement bar and some say you don't. Can someone please help?

the old sensors are the same size as the wholes , you take off the plastic ring and they are the same. Remove the black sensor holders from the 63 bumper, cut them untill the 03 sensors fit inside, then re glue to the bumper. check your position so they dont hit the metal bumper. Youll have to buy most every inner bracket for the 63 bumper, and some of the wheel well plastic. The flat center cover fits, just cut some off of it.

Where can I find a diagram? All the ones I’ve looked at for a 2009 SL63 show the old bumper cover with the PDC mould strips.

thanks

OK, I’ve been to the dealer.

The part number for the SL63 bumper is A2308853525. They are saying that the part number for the centre mounting bracket for that bumper is A2308851465 which is just an updated number for the SL55 bracket. I ordered it anyway and it is the same bracket as the SL55.

so I’m a bit confused now!

well as I remember, several parts were interchangable. Not many but a few. So take it apart and see if it works. Thats the case with most swaps. You have to do it before you know whats up. I remember I needes all the wheel well partsdont remember much else.
