Secondary air injection pump
My check engine light came on and after running the diagnosis it turns out to be the secondary air pump. I know where the pump is located but am unsure as to where the relay is. Can anyone give me the info. Thanks,

pump is located behind / under driver side headlight. you can tap on it a bit to see if it frees up the motor. the motor is only actuated during cold starts to reduce emmisions.

Hope the relay or fuse turns out to be your issue. I unfortunately had to replace the pump to the tune of ~$775 from MB because I couldn't find it anywhere else. Might be a good idea to check with the dealership and have them look up your vin, as there was a recall a while back that replaced the relay. The old relays were known to fail and cause the pump to run continuously which burnt it up. The relay is $35 or so if you need to buy one. It's not a hard job to change it out either so don't pay anyone to do it unless you absolutely have to.

My car just had this failure and my dealer did not mention any type of recall. Luckily I have an extended warranty which will cover most of the cost.

Do you know for a fact this repair is covered under the warranty? I ask bc I talked to the person who sold my warranty to me and he said he doubts it is covered as it is considered part of the exhaust system.

I will add that NAC would not cover all the cost. They covered about 80% of the part and only 50% of the labor. I found this odd as they covered 100% of my last and only other claim.

Could you pm me the total cost breakdown, what they covered, etc? Also, which NAC coverage level do you have?

The pump had a list price of $780 and NAC paid $602
The relay was $19 and they paid $14
Labor was $471 and they paid $201
The dealer accepted the lower part cost but I had to pay the difference in labor which was $270.

I don't like the air pump noise that get for few minutes on start up. Can I just pull the fuse to not activate the pump? I don't have to worry about any emissions testing or inspections.

The air injection pump is for a faster reach of the light off point for the cats. If you remove the fuse the cats will light off slower and the emission system will throw half a dozen codes and check engine light.

Different part numbers
Hello.
Now I have found out what this secondary pump part number is.
- Mercedes OEM partnumber is 0001404285
- Bosch part number for Mercedes OEM is 0580 000 018
- Bosch own part number is 0580 000 017
The same smog pump have three different part numbers . It depends on who you ask.
This pump fit SL600 R230 and many different mercedes models also.
