Mercedes Killing off V-12 SL65 Roadster

Check out Teddy Field's homepage article about the murder of the V-12 SL65 Roadster. Do you think this spells the end of the V-12 forever?

Silly article about old news. The v12 is just the lattest victim of the trend towards lower displacement engines with turbos. Is this the end? Probably not, but it may be a long time before we see one again. We are likely at the end of a golden age of HP. But if we made it back from the absolute dog engines of the late 70s we will see more fun toys again in the future.

I agree.
I think we'll see a twin turbo V12 from Mercedes again.
Problem is, I'll probably be driving a front-wheel walker at that time, at the local retirement home. :lol

Doubt it.

Not politically, economically, or socially popular enough to justify the costs. I think we have witnessed a golden age of performance over the last 10 years or so....will be very unlikely to continue.

I doubt it too. A V12 is a rather inefficient way to provide high output power compared to turbo-charging. Now that turbo-chargers are mainstream - and therefore cheap and reliable - I cannot see what the driver would be to introduce a new V12. Some high-end manufacturers will continue with V12s but Mercedes are saddled with fleet average emissions regulations which the smallest manufacturers are not, or to a much less extent.

Very hard and too early too comment? With the initial release of the new V8 BiTurbo engines, enough said. But will the new 5.5L AMG V8 BiTurbo live up to the likes of the older AMG V8 powerplants...

And as I've commented on the V12 engines, forget the SLS, get a Pagani Zonda for a real Mercedes V12 BiTurbo, I wonder if the motor was stroked by Mercedes or AMG, for their use in the Pagani's....?

Ok, lets wait for an all new V12 from AMG, without any nosing from Stuttgart or Zuffenhausen(Weissach).

The new V12 BiTurbo exclusively from AMG, will re-write the Evolution of all V12 engines ever built. Full Stop.

The Zonda Has a 7.3 Engine , built by AMG for Pagani.

BTW I'm pretty sure Mercedes will release a new V12 engine.

It's a matter of image.

Car manufacturers ared divided in two groups. Those who offer a V12 engine in their Lineup and those who don't.

600 V12 is an icon of luxury.

In My opinion the next V12 will be a 5.5 48 Valves engine producing 570 Horsepower.

The new Pagani Huayra has got the AMG V12 6.0 Liter with 700HP exclusively.

Maybach has the 6.0 AMG-V12 Biturbo and S65 AMG and CL65 AMG.

Glad to hear that more folks and manufacturers are going to be pulling more MPG. That'll make me feel less guilty about the wife driving the S600 as her daily driver! I get cars sometimes for uniqueness/obnoxious levels and with all these new regs. coming down I think a V12 Twin Turbo certainly fits that bill. This is my first V12 and I love it, I only wish I could squeeze one into the 300ZX!

Interesting.......

Does this make the V-12 SL 65 depreciate faster now or appreciate in the distant future, say 20 years?

probably slows near term depreciation to a certain degree, not much chance of helping out at all in 10 years. You can buy the r129 sl600 for about the same price as the r129 SL500. And who wants the old BMW 750il V12?

good examples....

Like your examples, especially R129.....

Only difference that might make an impact might be the limited production of AMG - SL 65s?

Don't know how many 600s were built for R129.....or if the limited production was similar for the 600....

BMW example made me laugh........don't want one of those......

2019 E300, 2018 GLE43, 2009 E350 Sport, 2002 Viggen cabrio,
Alway been a fan of forced induction. Thought the first generation 6.3 as replacement for the 5.0 in the 55 series AMG did not make me happy. Because of the performance the high performance and better milage, ive perfered forced over the NA. A 12 IMHO is just a status symbol. Not necessarily a power child but the state of social and political climate may result in the 12 passing into the history books ESP when the v8 kompressors give same or better performance. I'd love to see a bi turbo v12 e85 spec but don't think we will

I think we will all be driving full electrics at some point and these will be fast as hell with 100% torque from o rpm! When battery technology advances a bit more, watch out! Just bring along your own soundtrack or get used to whine as engine sound.

the future is swappable battery packs. You pull into a service station, a robot pulls out your battery pack from underneath your car and swaps in a new one. You pay for the difference in charge. There's already a prototype of this system in development for taxi-cabs.
