Post V12 secondary cats??

I can't figure out where the secondary cats are on the V12s. (Do they even exist?)

When I was under my 600, I couldn't see them.

I searched and found this image of the SL65 exhaust...again I can't see where they are located, unless what I keep thinking is the actual cat is actually the secondary cat...however, I could swear there is an O2 sensor on it.

Turns out, I am correct:

Notice the parts diagram, only V8/SL55s have the secondary cats:

R230 V12 Cats

+1. Only 1 set of cats on V12 SL.

Stock exhaust is pretty stout out of the box, huge piping stepped down progressively in diameter from front to rear. Just remove the rear mufflers if you want better sound and maybe a smidgen better flow.

I have only one set of cats and they are front cats at my SL600....
It's seems that somebody have two cats like this setup at this drawing.
I have a friend in Germany who have this setup at his SL600.... and he have imported it from USA.

So maybe this is why Mercedes give two different hp numbers at the same engine.... 500 hp and 517 hp?
500 hp have two cats.... (first and secondary with resomnators) and 517 have only first cats setup with H-pipe.
Here is few pictures from my exhaust systeem and I think it's OEM.

US R230 SL600/65 models have what appears to be (1) giant pair of cats, but if you remove them & look inside them you will see where the 2nd set of cats went lol... The giant pair is actually a set of (2) side by side ie (4) total, they welded both pairs together equaling what apears to be only (1) pair from outside but indeed there are (4) cats inside that mini-beer keg exterior.

Remove them ALL for an easy 30+ rwhp

Correct All m275's have primary and secondary cats in the same housing. The post cat o2 is in the middle of the "beer keg"

.

"Mini - beer keg"... where is it at the car?
Do you mean at the same keg where the first cats are?
Welded together?

Yes... Using this diagram it's the very front near the Engine, the cats you want to remove are right behind Turbo's labeled "157 Firewall Catalytic Converter" on Diagram/List Click the image to open in full size.

Thank you....
My friend in Germany saw my (OEM PICTURES ) setup and he told me that it seems Mercedes SL600 use two differenet type of exhaust systems.
One that I have and one same as this picture show. He had this at his car and he have removed "undefloor catalytic converters 158".

So now we all know how it is...

I have an 03 CL55 & i want to make some changes to the exhaust. What sort of sound would I get from removing the secondary cats and resonators ONLY ? Would I see power gains from doing that? Any suggestions? should i set up an x-pipe instead of the secondary cats or not. I will leave the primary cats to avoid any problems with the O2 sensors.
thanks
