There are several write-ups of DIY procedures around, both on this, and on other MB Forums. Here is one on another forum that seems pretty thorough.

amok, et al,
Still working on it - obtaining the transparent magnetic filters. An associate living in Germany has contacted them, they say they welcome international business, and will work with me on an order. I've e-mailed with some questions regarding price, etc. and did not receive a response after 5 business days. My associate will be contacting them via telephone again within a day or two. AS SOON as I get information about availability, price, etc. I'll post it here.
I'm aware of the eBay.de site, and products they list there. One possible option might be listing the filter on US eBay. I'm hoping a group buy might result in both lower price and shipping costs.
BTW, amok, nice writeup on the valve service. THANKS for that

Amok,
You may be correct regarding their 'commitment' to selling filters. Two telephone calls from my buddy in Germany to the company has not gotten any response to my e-mail!
The best alternative I've found for a SMALL filter to fit in the line is the Magnafine filter made by an Australian company. They make one with a 1/2" diameter connection that will fit well. But, it's just about 2" longer than I'd really like, and kind of ugly. BUT - a LOT cheaper!! www.magnafilter.com
I very well may end up using this if the German company doesn't show interest in product sales.

This could work: http://www.magnom.com/wp-content/fil...i_Midi_Max.pdf
Designed for protecting hydraulic- and fuel system in-line - small and easy to install.
http://www.magnom.com/magnom-product...idi-max-range/
They sell in the UK and the US
This is magnet only - there's no mesh but actually it shouldn't be needed since there's already a 10 mesh MB standard in the system. Only one thing - aluminium isn't magnetic and the hydraulic blocks are in aluminium.

Amok,
Yes, those filters should work as well. There is a poster on another Forum who has a set of these, but has not yet gotten them installed. Turns out they will be at least as long if not longer than the Magnafine filters.
Also, another poster on another forum has installed the Magnafine filter in his SL55. His installation looks quite good - did not cut the OE hose, just installed the filter on the end of it, then connected it to the reservoir with a short piece of transparent hydraulic hose. Thus, he can see the fluid color. I'm giving Exclusive Automotive another 3 days, and if I haven't heard from them, I'm going to abandon hope there and install the Magnafine with a transparent hose. Total cost should be less than $20, as I bought the filter for less than $15.
I also agree regarding the lack of a mesh filter in the magnetic filters. The 'new' MB filters are 3 micron, and that's what I'll install as well. It seem top me the internals of the pump must be steel, since the pump produces hydraulic pressure of about 200 bar - 3000 psi. That to me is the reason for a magnetic filter.
Cheers,
Gary Knox

Could you post the Magnafine link? I might be doing this set up on my 65 as well.
Thanks,

V12,
The link to Magnafilter is in one of my posts above. The sublink to the Magnafine filter is: http://magnafilter.com.au/magnefine.html
These are for sale on Amazon and eBay. You'd need one with the 1/2" connectors for the ABC system. They are frequently used as an accessory in automatic transmission lines as well - I think those usually take the 3/8" connectors.

Just ordered one of those 1/2" magnafines from the ebay link.
I won't get to install it until May though when I get to see my car again.
For $20, seems like a no-brainer peace of mind.
Kudos for all the legwork and I'll look forward to your setup pics!
I hope a year or two from now.. with these mass installed on SL55's from DIY's, the ABC horror stories will become a thing of the past.

Tomcruiser,
Yes - that link is where I bought the Magnefine filter I installed on my ABC return hose. It's actually $12.99, but still the best deal around (that I found).

I'm still running my first Magnefine filter, trying to get about 3000 miles on it, before I swap it with another new one. Currently have about 1,500 miles on the first filter.
Once I do get around to changing the first one, I will be sure and post pics of it. I'm going to attempt to open the filter up without tearing it up too much, and see how well it performed.

I just ordered the Magnafine filter and expected to arrive next week. Can you post a picture how you installed it? Does it fit tight in a limited space? Do you just spliced off and reuse the existing hose?
Thanks

Because I want to be sure these are actually working as they should, and filtering properly. They are 13 bucks, so I don't mind wasting one or two of them for testing.
