'02 SL55 - Can't start the engine when warm (Crankshaft sensor new)
I bought my SL55 thinking that it would take my fast from one place to the other, in reality, it's to go from one problem to the other that I'm fast !
Ok, joke aside, my SL55 is from 2002 and after replacing the conductor plate, the IC pump and refreshing the ABC I thought I was ready to enjoy the car.
Well ... it seems it is still too early.
It does start easily when cold, drives perfectly but once I stop it, it will not start again as long as the engine is warm. You can hear it trying, but it sounds like the starter is having big difficulties to rev the engine, as if it was short on power.
Batteries were fine, so I thought that the crankshaft position sensor was the trouble maker. I replaced it with the Bosch part 0 261 210 170 (instead of the 0 261 210 171 or ref Mercedes A 003 153 27 28) but problem is still there.
Any idea ?

Sorry I completely missed your comment about the Starter and jumped right to why a hot engine might not start
First things I'd look at would be 1) Battery - are you sure it's ok and contacts are good? 2) Starter motor - any starter motor labors more when hot; so it could be starter motor on the way out 3) Grounds cable/strap and at solenoid

MBWorld Fanatic!
Does the car sound at all like this when attempting a start?
If so, jump to post 18 in this thread. The thread is a bit hard to follow as lots of other issues are discussed. If I recall, the member finally resolved his problem by replacing both batteries.

Excellent link, the issue looks very similar. I will check the battery to make sure it does not come from there.
