Goggle eyes SL
Every now and then car manufacturer's drop a clanger. I had a Subaru once
and they were very popular, then they brought out a new model, and it had
goggle eyes and everyone hated it. Now the 230 is a fine looking car, and then in 2009 the 63 came out which looked even better. Then they brought
out the 231 63, and it has goggle headlights, this and a few other things
put me right of mine. Compare the front of all 3 models, the latest front
just looks NAF,

Totally agree. The 2009 is okay, but the 2006-2008 were the best lookers imho.
I just picked up an 08 SL65 Black/Black ~20k miles -- by far my favorite (only 140 made in 08). A couple of easy changes like a single fin grill and illuminated AMG door sills make the car look current. It's a timeless beautiful design.
A few quick performance mods (ecu, improved intercooler, larger air box, etc.) and it competes with the r231... of course there are many more that can be done.

IMO R 231 looks fat ,too rounded and just ugly,I just saw a black R231 SL65 a rare sighting these days ,if you gave it to me I'd sell it !

I like parts of the 231, but as a package I don't think it works well. I think I really only like newer technology and features that you get with it. It looks like they had three different groups working on the project and then just assembled the final efforts into one car. I like the r230's with single slat grille, sl63 rear bumper conversion and a front lip, but that's just my opinion.

The only thing I liked about my 231 was the power, it was awesome
especially after the ECU was re-mapped, a bit of an animal. But the looks
left me cold. And it fell out of bed when I sold it after a year, was offered 54K
for a car costing 122k .
