2001 E320
Kimber,
Take a look at the photos I have posted E500 should have the MAF sensor in the same area. By the way I replaced my MAF in less than 10 min on my 2001 E320 and the car running great as new. In addition I unplugged battary (-) wire and left for 5 min to get rid of check engine sign after the installation. You can always use ODBII to erase check engine. You can try cleanning the MAF but I think most cases it does not work, just pay $275 for a new one and get it done yourself instead of dealer charging $750.

After you clean MAF sensor (and you need to liberally spray it to clean it) sometimes engine hunts with no throttle control.

Remove neg batt term inal (have radio code handy)
Leave off for 30 mins plus.
Replace

Start engine, put in drive, Do not touch accelerator pedal, foot on brake, let idle for 10 minutes. Engine should get smoother.
Turn off restart and check.
