SLK230 vacuum diaphragm whistle

I have a 1999 SLK230. There is an intermittent high pitched whistling sound that seems to be coming from behind the dash. I took it to a shop and they said there is a bellow related to the air conditioner/heater/defroster that has a tear in it. They said I would have to take it to the dealer to have the dash pulled to fix it.

Based on other posts, this seems to be the diaphragm that works with the Climate Control Mechanism that is located behind the glove compartment.

The A/C and heat seem to work ok, what exactly does the diaphragm do?

Is there a vacuum line that feeds the diaphragm that could be disconnected to stop the whistling? Can it be accessed without disassembling the entire dash? Could the vacumm line be disconnected from the engine compartment? Any downside to doing this?

So does that mean the diaphragm controls the door that chooses inside or outside air?

To plug it with a screw, can I remove just the glovebox door or is dash disassembly required?

Have alokk where hose goes thru firewall, Pull it off manifold, ad a short bit of hose with a plugged end as a temp fix.

If the diaphragm is ruptured, does that mean the door will be stuck in fresh mode only or recirc mode only?

okay, so now i ordered, the part, i took out the glove box once again, so how does that darn part come out, it looks like somekind of a slider clip the part is so far back, i did take off the vacuum line from the top, but the square part looks like it should go through the fresh air door to open and close it,
