05 SLK350 Needs replacement power steering rack. $2500 ouch!

I am bummed out. I store my car all winter for the most part. January, I took a drive to keep everything working and came back with a leak for the power steering rack. I bought the correct fluid and topped it off. Started it up and it proceeded to dump it all on the floor. Well I reconnected the trickle charger and waited until this week to have it flatbed hauled to the Mercedes dealer. This SLK350 only has 17,000 miles on it. I got a call from the dealer and was told the steering rack has a seal blown on the drivers side. Was told they do not replace seals and only replace the entire rack. Cost $2500 dollars. Is this a problem with this car or am I the only unlucky one?

2005 slk350 6MT
You might be the unlucky one. I have a 2005 slk350 with 102k and no leaks on the rack n pinion. If your were in SoCal, I can have it done for half the price. Go on yelp.com and find an independent shop since you already know the failure. Good luck

Honestly? If you can replace the seals, replace the seals.
