Vibrations when turning

When I turn left I get a rattle that's more like a clapping sound. This happens more as I turn into a tight left hander. It does when I turn right as well but not as much as when I turn left. It's as though something is flapping against the wheel as it is turning. Checked but found nothing. No sounds when driving straight. Yesterday though, the steering wheel started to vibrate as well and I had to stop in a layby. When I started again the vibrations ni steering vanished but the clapping sound when turning left continued.
Any clues?
