E63 AMG vs. E60 BMW M5 - looking for practical answers!

So are you guys saying there is something wrong with the BMW smg option?? I had a buddy with the older model M3 with the smg and I thought it was awesome. I don't use the paddles on my E63. Way too slow for my taste. That is one reason I would want a BMW over the E63 if the smg really works well.

thats hella funny you think "most people" know what an M5 and w211 AMG is. "most people" drive toyotas and hondas, economy cars, and could care less about someone with an AMG or M.
"most people know what an E55/63 is for sure" your head must get bigger when you step food in your amg "for sure"

I've owned both and they are VERY different cars.
Purchased my 2006 E60 M5 new with the intention of replacing my 2003 E39 M5. Long story short I sold the E60 M5 within 6 months and kept my E39 M5.
If you want a sedan to go screaming around all day at 6-8000 rpm (where you need to be to move the car) then it is great. I personally have other cars for that and not what I wanted in a sedan. The E63, like the E39 M5, has a lot more "useable" power (low end torque) for everyday driving than the E60 M5. While the E60 M5 handled better the MB E63 is a much more comfortable cruising car like the E39 M5.
The E60 M5 mileage was aweful and the fuel tank was very small. Add to that two horrible inventions called I-Drive and SMG and it just ended up as a car that to me was not something I wanted for a daily driver.
The MB E63 is a much better replacement for my E39 M5.
Unfortunatly, neither can come close to what my E39 M5 was. That was, by far, the best sedan I have ever owned.

We sometimes forget being on a "dedicated car forum" that the general public knows nothing about cars or could care less. We (forum guys) are probably I would say at most 5% so yea majority would not even know AMG or think it's a sport package with a "Badge". Why do you think so many people buy fake AMG and M/// badges on ebay

Both great cars and you can pro & con it all day, the responses here ring true.

I have an E39 M5 and am thinking about the E63. How do the two compare? What is it about the M5 that makes it better than the E63, in your opinion?
#35
another thought about the amg, it is automatic but when I want to have fun driving , I flip it to manual mode, start slowly in first gear, shift into 2nd gear early into the rpm range, then press hard on the gas while in 2nd gear... the tq pulls good and the engine sounds bad *** at low rpm.

BMW rubbed me the wrong way when I went to their lot. I was looking at a M5, when I asked the sales rep to start the car, he said it doesn't have any gas. They can keep it for all I care, That first impression will last a life time.
Went to a benz dealer and got a 63 Wagon.

Well this evening I finally had a chance to drive a 2008 E63 which seems like it was FULLY LOADED as the msrp was $106,000+
How do you guys feel about the P030 package? It's an $8500 performance package ~wow!
Apparently it had a few thousand miles, black on black and dealer had to buy it back from customer when he lost his job and could not get the credit approval??? My question is how did they let him have the car first if he did not get the loan...sounds fishy.
So anyways this black/black car is a $106k msrp car with 2000+ miles. What would you guys offer as a fair price?
Driving impression, the car is FAST and very solid on the highway. Definitely more luxo feeling than the m5. The tranny shifts slower than the m5 but I do like it's sport mode where you can immediately feel the steering wheel tighten up and the exhaust note pickup a throaty roar!

Sounds like you're leaning towards the E63. I think you'll love how good it is in many different roles. Anyway, I'd lowball them in this economic condition. Go to another dealer and see how low you can get a brand new one for and then work down from there. 2,000 miles across one owner with a fishy story and a dealer who's probably put a few miles and test drives on it themselves. Also, when did the warranty begin? Sounds like that started with the first sale, so take more off for that (see the thread on extended warranties and how much those cost). Also, try searching the forums for how much people are paying for these right now.
Good luck!

Some dealers were offering $30k off on fully loaded new ones (meaning ones that have MSRP of $106k like the one you looked at). And since this one is NOT brand new and has 2000 miles, I'd offer them $55k and work up to low to mid 60s.... if they don't take the deal, then simply go to another dealer who is willing to give you a better deal. You should be able to get a decent E63 for upper $50s to low $60s.... I think right now their going in the auction for low to mid $50s.....

Wow I did not know those kinds of deals can be had right now - if I can find a e63 amg in white (only want the keyless go and panorama) as my must have options, then I'll be all set
On the 106k msrp car, I actually DO NOT want the park-distance since it's got that ugly black plexi sensor hidden in the grill which is visible!
I'm going to start looking around but THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE WEALTH of information!

2003 E55 AMG
No, the M5 just looks bigger to me when standing next to the cars. Trust me, the dealer I bought from has every exotic manufacturer. They actually brought a M5 out to sit right next to the E63. I didn't even have to drive the M5 to say no. I just think that the M5's front end is "THICK". I really don't know how else to put it. Maybe it's the tires and rims in the front. The CLS to me looks like the same size as the E63 just sculpted differently. I'm not saying the M5 is a bad looking car it just wasn't for me.
Rick, happy hunting for a new car and like the guys said, due to the economic situation, you are in the drivers seat...oops, another pun!

What's hidden behind the grill is not the parking sensor, that's actually the sonar for the distronic option (auto adjustable cruise control option). Distronic is extremely rare on the E63s because it's a 3000 option, but it's a very nice feature to have

The E63 is a great car too but a bit too soft for my taste and lacks a manual transmission.
Otherwise it is a very worthy replacement.

huh? step food in your amg? Just since most people drive toyotas or hondas does not mean they dont know what the E55 or M5 is. I never said people care about what you drive. Just stated they know what both cars are here in Boston. Someone is defensive for no good reason

Well this is my top 3 from 1st choice to 3rd:
1) 07/08 white e63 amg
2) 07/08 white m5
3) 08 white IS-F
Was in the Portland metro area for work and it seems this car is super rare in the northwest as dealers don't even want to deal that much. I'll keep looking for one of those cars listed above.

I got thrown a deal on a 08 IS-F with only 1200 miles and original owner applied the clear bra. I can buy that car for $45k which seems to be a good deal.
My girl and I both know the e63 is a more suited car as it's bigger, seats 5 and has the large trunk + fold down rear seats. I have yet to find a e63 argh! decisions!

However, I do admit that $45k is an attractive deal ...... if they're offering $45k, then offer them $40k flat and make the deal
Have you considered a used C63?
#50
45k is a good but not great price, that seems to be the going rate nowadays. Used C63 are not going for as cheap as the IS-F. If you don't need the room go for it but I think the E63 and M5 are better deals. I say wait till you really find the car you are happy with.
