Real Cars
My $.02.
I know you did not specify the reason for the question, so I am going to assume you are shopping for one.
While having a high mileage E55 is not a bad thing, if your budget limits you only to purchasing the very bottom of the barrel example - IE an '03 with 6 figure mileage, I do not think this car is for you. Maintenance, consumables, and general upkeep is expensive on this car and if spending $20k on a car is already a stretch, then the bills to keep what originally was a $90-$100k Mercedes (maintenance, consumables, and general upkeep do not depreciate over time) is likely going to be more than you can chew.

2005 E55 amg
valid point, the only reason I am asking is because I am about to purchase an 04 e55 with 72,000 on it. I am wondering how much more driving I will get out of it before major overhaul becomes an issue.

2004 with just shy of 70,000. I just took it on a 1300 mile road trip; solid.
Though my alternator did take a poopy on me about eight thousand miles ago.

i had an 00 e55 that bought in 01 and sold 3 years later with 90k+ on it. thank god for warranties! la to vegas few times, and other trips to tahoe, i could count up to over a minute (counting each number slowly, per second, not rattling them off nervously) where I had it pegged at whatever top speed was limited to, and not counting the time to get up to that speed. that b+>t^h could hold that thing up at top speed without flinching, only thing to slow down for was traffic. wow, those were the days. miss that car. that blk/blk beast ran STRONG. try getting up to 160(ish..whatever top speed was limited to), THEN counting off each second you have that thing bouncing off the revv limiter for as long as you can before having to slow for other vehicles while blasting barry manilow (just for the comedy factor). fun times, fun times. way back, same thing, but this time car loaded with new hotties bringing back to l.a. miss that car. did i say that already? ha ha.

I put 35k miles on my 05 from January through June (70k-105k), then bought another car to work in (I miss driving the E every day, and it's hard as hell to walk past it to get in the beater every day.-almost feels like I'm cheating on a beauty queen with a prostitute.)

2004 E55 AMG
That's fantastic! I've had mine for 13K(bought it in May with 62K), and I'm already making a good dent into the "stuff that should never fail but fails anyway" list. Replaced the I/C pump, bought new wheels because one spontaneously cracked, exhaust manifold magically broke in half, and the dynamic seats and wipers occasionally stop working. I'm just waiting for the alternator and the entire Airmatic and SBC systems to fail.

While I think these engines are solid for a lot of hard or abused miles...things independent of the drivetrain can no wrong that would cause ownership to be expensive, stressful and even give most potential owners second thoughts.
My car at 47,000 miles went in for Dynamic seat issues, tiny paint flaw and the Command unit had vertical lines across it similar to an old failing computer monitor...total cost for these repairs were over $7,000, total time in the shop 3+ weeks.

Mercedes S55 AMG
I don't have an E55, but an S55 - and I have just reached 155,000 miles. They have differences, but still there are a lot of common parts between the E and S and technologies, so you can have a read here and see what can happen: (Ball joints, Engine mounts, etc)
