Guys: I am noticing (small amounts) of oil on my garage floor. Are these engines prone to leaks because of the stress there put under? Anybody have experience with there rear seals and manifolds leaking oil, the cost to repair, etc?? Thanks

These are not SR71's that leak when on the ground. Any leak should be looked at and fixed.

You can quickly check the valve covers and see if that is the source of the leak (maybe the bolts to the valve covers are lose). If that is the case, then its something easy that you can do yourself.

As for rear seals, do a search and you should find other members who had rear seal leaks, but I do not believe its common. Good luck.

Valve cover leaks will generally give you a telltale burning oil smell since they drip directly on the exhaust manifolds.

I had leaks even with only 29,000 miles on the odometer. It's common.

if anything is dripping you have a big issue. These cars are all covered up with plastic panels underneath, so if its dripping through the trays, its a significant leak.

I think its the rear seal to be honest, and my mechanic wants $900 to fix.

Also check the valve cover gaskets as they are fairly cheap and easy to replace. There's a DIY out there for you to look at for those.

Rear seal is a major job as you have to drop the transmission.

If its leaking on the floor prob read main seal leak. Mine is seeping right now on the lower rim. But I know it will need to be looked at when it gets worse.

Best way to check is putting the car on a lift to see where the leak comes from? Could be your rear seal is worn out.

I had two leaks so far. One from the cam cover's internal breather setup where the sections on each side are bonded into place. The one with the larger section weeped on mine. Easy but time consuming DIY repair. This leak makes the covers look terrible and yes drips down onto the headers.

The socket plug into the rear / side of the tranny was the next one and this has been repaired for $75 privately by a MB tech. This is more problematic as the oil can find its way up the harness into the tranny electronics and that then gets nasty. The new plug is a new style plug apparently and the issue should not recur.
