FUEL PUMP/SENDING AND GAS TANK ISSUES!! NEED HELP! PLEASE ADVISE!

Literally 2 weeks ago I spent big bucks having the fuel pumps/sending units replaced, as I has gas leak and odor. I got the car back hoping all was well. at the 1st fill up after the repair, still leaked, still had smell. Took the car back today - only day they could get me in since repair - and now they are telling me I need a new gas tank!!! WTF???!!! I NEED ADVICE! I am not going to front the 1700 for the new tank after spending over 1000 for sending/pumps - knowing this is an issue!! HELP! PLEASE ADVISE! :20:

I've posted in that thread.. yes. But are there any solutions at this point or do I just pay up to have it done?

Unless you have an extended warranty, you need to pay to have your tank replaced.

I'm in the same situation as my dealer just got the grommet in today and is replacing the pump as there was a burn in my harness. Fortunately, they checked the tank and there was no crack.

If you dont want to pay for a new gas tank. Then dont fill up the tank all the way. Wait until the class action lawsuit before spending any out of pocket $$$. There is a flaw in the sending unit and gas tanks, so MB should be paying for it and not us owners.

Yup also, fight fight fight with the dealer, you might get away with just paying the part and not labor but , make the complaint with NHTSA and call them leave messages as well

Ask for the old tank back. Have them show you where it leaked. Call NHTSA and tell em you have something for them to look at. If someone at the dealer says you can't have the old tank for safety reasons slap him and call him a filthy liar.

Looks minimal here. I actually has gas leaking on the ground before and after the sending unit repair. My biggest issue is - Were the sending units the fault to begin with? Was the money spent on the correct diagnosis? This is my argument at this point. I understand these are expensive cars to maintain and hove no problem paying to play. I do have a problem with the known issue MB is having with this and paying for something that did not fix the issue the first time.

Im in the same situation as you. As another poster pointed out....I just fill my gas tank halfway. Im not paying for it out of my pocket? Why should a gas tank be a wear and tear item like brakes and a windshield wiper? Doesnt make sense to me.

Makes perfect sense to the dealer, MBUSA, and their lawyers. Of course you have thier lawyers making the claim that the independent mechanics/and or dealers screwed up the assembly during the service campaign and exonerating MBUSA from any liability.

When is it normal for a dealer to stock gas tanks (5-6 high) in a corner of a service bay awaiting potential customers who are told a complete replacement is necessary.

Get this. My SA called yesterday to tell me they found out the cause of the leak. The wiring harness had a burn in it that caused the failure of the tank grommet. That is just so reassuring.

So you need a tank too???

The MB Dealer has no inclination of trying to help with this issue. My biggest argument with them is that the car was in for a fuel leak 3 weeks ago - the short of it is that the fuel leak was not fixed. What was done to make sure the car was diagnosed correctly and that my money was not wasted on a bogus repair?? I asked them if they are CERTAIN that the gas tank is the problem and can they SEE the leak? They said the tank has to be dropped to see the leak - did not drop tank - Why is this not being done? Sounds like they are only guessing at this point!!?? (Although after many posts of this exact issue, one can only assume that it is the case.)

This has got to be the most frustrating thing ever.

Luckily, I didn't need a new tank, but since my warranty company is covering the repairs, the inspector needs to check everything.

I also filed a report with the EPA. Maybe they can open an investigation too. They already caught MB once and it costs them $59 million.

I have driven an E55 AMG purchased brand new in 2005 the first year I owned it I had to have its gas tank repaired and again in 2008 and in 2010 the sending unit and leveler and in 2012 the leveler. This month Jan. 31, 2013 a month after the leveler I am paying for installation of a tank that is cracked next to the spigot just like 2010 and 2006 in 2010 the upholstery had to be changed because not only did my garage smell like gas the car interior reaked. In the seven years of owning this expensive car I can only say I have has twenty four segmented months of a gas free odor in my garage. Not once have I been contacted about a recall. At this point I never expect to be able to safely fill my tank again without it breaking again. I will have to only fill it half way. The local attorneys will have to help me on this one. The class action suit will likely never cover more than a small percentage of my costs and doubtfully will I ever have a functioning fuel system if the suit is one.
