asp pulley wobble

does anyone else's asp tensioner pulley have this much play in it in the video below? I have only had the pulley on my car for about a month as i changed it out as i am trying to find the cause of my belt constantly coming off (changed belt brands, sizes, then tensioner pulley to no avail... changing actual tensioner next)

so today belt came off again- actually this time it shredded and when i put a replacement belt on i noticed the wobble in the new asp tensioner pulley and doesnt seem normal but wanted to confirm here

I see what you are refering to, but it does not look that bad to me. When did your car start throwing belts? Did it throw belts before you touched any of the pullies?

car started throwing belt after having ec 172m pulley installed about april and throws the dayco 51.5 belts off and shreds the gates 51.4 and goodyear gator 51.5 belts...

thought it was belts at first so ec recommended trying diff brands which i did to no avail... then i noticed a little scoring on the top of the belts (smooth side) so though tensioner pulley might be the culpret since its the only pulley that touches th smooth side of belt, so switched to ASP tensioner pulley to no avail and now it looks kinda wobbly as in the video, but i couldnt honestly remember what the original MB tensioner pulley spun like so i had no ref as to if this is normal for the asp pulley or not

i def am going to order a new actual tensioner unit that the pulley attaches to because it seems its not holding the dayco belt tight enough... really annoying when you are trying to pull away from someone and then all the sudden car looses like 200hp cuz a belt came of

I just sold my spare oem tensioner, I would have let you have it for next to nothing man. My OEM idler pulley and tensioner does vibrate a little back and forth, but the actual pulley has no wobble if that makes sense.

It sounds like the crank pulley is the culprit, if this issue started right after install. Could you put a vid up of the crank pulley at idle? Did you inspect the grooves of the welded on outer to make sure they were smooth, and no knicks?

Change the tensioner. My car did it 3 times on stock pulley. I changed the tensioner and put ASP pulley on and it was fine after that.

the crank pulley seemed fine, i will post vid later tonight when i get home...

it def started right after pulley install but i think that could also be that on stock belt and pulley the tensioner was maybe bad but tight enough and then when changing to the larger pulley and belt combo may have put the tensioner in a range where its not giving enough pressure on the belts allowing them to usually hop off and occasionally shred...

usually when it happens i pull over and the belt is just sitting by the fan shroud untouched and fine and i just pop it back on... i put the belt on in about 5 seconds now from doing it so many times lol

My ASP tensioner pulley had some wobble as well, so I tossed that junk and put a new OEM tensioner unit on.

Higher rpm Z rated bearings, lighter, less cost and CNC made VS a stock tensioner pulley made out of two halves of steel that are riveted together. As you speed up the stock pulley bearings with larger crank pulley`s , they overheat and go past their rated RPM rating. The ASP idler pulley takes care of that with Z rated bearings.

The pulley just bolts to the tensioner spring housing, so any play in that spring housing can make the pulley look like it is wobbling a little.

sorry was out of country for a little while so didnt have chance to upload video of crank pulley, but here is is now... crank pulley appears to be fine from what i can see... is this how others aftermarket pulleys spin or is it more true ?

Click the image to open in full size.

and mine is still throwing belts but i got a tensioner from shardul that i will install probably tonight and see if that fixes it, if not then probably just going to go back to stock pulley and either get the weistec blower when hp/tq, etc numbers come out and when someone else has run it for a while... or i will just sell the car if not.

I threw belt after belt with my pinned 180mm pulley. I think it had something to the do with the lip design as the pulley itself was true. Gates belt would not last over 500 miles, while Dayco would last a bit longer. I think total I shredded over 7 belts. Not a single tossed pulley with my 200mm welded unit.

mine is same... with gates, they last no time and shred (51.4 in) and with the dayco they last longer and fall off instead of shred (51.5 in) then i just pop the dayco's back on

super ducking annoy

i changed the tensioner assembly last night so will see if that works.

when changing it i also inspected crank pulley further and noticed a little nick on the top of the outer ring as seen in the pics below... it is kind of scratchy (for lack of better word lol) but its on outer ring above where the belt seats so i wouldnt think it would affect anything... thoughts ?

also on the belts this seems to happen to all my belts where a new belt will have abrasion and exposed inner wires after no time from being installed... i dont think that is normal

The belts I've used always have exposed strands of fabric on them. Just a thought. Hopefully you get it figured out.

thanks that makes me feel a little better... i put a new gates 51.4 HD belt on and will check it to see if any unusual scaring shows up on the side with the nick on the crank pulley...

all the 51.4 gates belt have been shredding so if this one doesnt then i think the tensioner was the culprit, but if it shreds like all the rest then i gotta believe its the pulley as i never threw a belt before the 172M pulley was added in march.

5,000 miles since i have a 168mm crank pulley and see strands of fabric on the edges of my sc belt. So may be just common to see this on the belt

I have been having belt shredding issues too, not sure if coincidence or not but I had a squeak which I thought was pullies (it turned out to be the belt) so I bought the ASP set and shredded the belt a couple days later after driving from Jacksonville to Miami for the Eurocharged tune day. Got another belt on there (RedBullJnky hooked me up with his off his car since he was leaving it at the garage) and it lasted a few trips through Florida (1400 miles?) then it shredded (both Gates 51.5). Ordered a Napa belt (think made by Gates) and drove from the Keys to Jacksonville and a little around so maybe 700 miles so far then left town so not sure how that one is going to hold up. Oh and my belts also get a frey on the inside edge closest to the engine.

Wonder if I need a new tensior and that could be my issue?

at least i am not the only one lol makes me feel a little better!

i think the solution is weistec blower and back to stock pulley or 168mm depending on what weistec's numbers come out to be on hp/tq

otherwise i am giving up on s/c cars and sticking with turbos
