Pano Motor Repair DIY- courtesy of Eurocharged
Hey everyone, I too had the machine gun sound from the pano roof and figured I would do a DIY on how to fix it!
First the motor:
You can get one new or used. I picked up a used on ebay for ~$200. Remember that there are two motors there, one for the glass, and one for the cover.
OEM # 203 820 3242 - part number for the glass motor
Ok, lets get started...wear gloves as that suede marks easily!
you need to fully close the roof. If you need to this can be done by hand. On the enter console (roof) you will see two speaker grills. Pop open the left hand side one and you will see a hex opening. Insert hex tool, and manually crank that baby shut!
Remove the sunvisors screws
Remove the visors themselves (flip down the cover)
Remove the o-crap handles
Now you should be looking at this
Loosen the pillars on both sides...pulls out as its clipped on
Ok, now we will focus on the center console
remove the cover closest to the glass (snap fit)
Now, push your face on the glass and you will see two small tabs. (see pic) They are located in the back of the console closest to the glass
Push both black tabs and pull back and the console will slide out.
Smack the rearview mirror at an angle and it will pop out of the fit (push fit)
Remove the metal Y section
Unplug with wires being very careful. You might want to disconnect the rain sensor as well to make it easy to get around
Now we can see the motor you want to get to. If sitting in the drivers side, it is closest to you. The cover motor is on the pass side
Gently bend down the headliner to gain access to the motor. There are three screws holding it down. Remove it and look at the mess...
Here is what the track looked like after I removed the motor
Put the new motor in and don't forget to lube the track
Now, remove fuse 9 from the trunk. That should clear the memory for the damn thing. I had to play with it a few times and then everything started working again. You will have to go all the way open then closed a few times etc. Put the console back in and the rearview mirror just needs to be press fit into the slot (spring loaded). Its finicky but will go back eventually. I did everything in 1.5 hours start to finish.
Put everything back together and enjoy the fact you just saved a ton of cash...$ you can spend on eurocharged.com

Cool man, I definitely will be doing this when I make it back home in a few months. I appreciate the pics and step by step instructions so I don't have to figure it out as I go.

Did you do this in an hour and a half sight unseen, or did you have instructions?
Great write up. I disconnected battery, and now I cant open glass at all. Shade is fine, but glass wont move. I'm going to try fuse 9. I know it works perfect as I used it the day before I replaced my main battery. Just need to get it open to resync. Arg

Fuse 9 should help with that...there is a sensor in the damn thing that needs to be perfect for it to work..

+1...
I pulled my fuse 9 (in DVD comp) and then tried to open Pano.. No luck. Ill try again tomorrow. I read somewhere that you may have to try a couple of times... ARG
And as I said, Ive never had any issues with pano since it gets used very infrequently. Only problem has been resetting it

Has anyone ever had to replace the entire asembly when having the "machine gun" issue? The shop is telling me the motor needs replaced (covered under warranty), but the assembly needs replaced as well (not covered under warranty). Are they trying to blow smoke up my a$$ or can this be the case?

He ran a bolt from one side of the motor housing to the other and then tightened it all down with a nylock nut and washer. The issue is the motor housings flex and bolting it this way will keep the Housing lined up. Certainly sounds like a good cheap fix instead of forking out almost $400 for a new motor from MB.

Great post. Tried it today. A couple of things
1. The problem could be as simple as, the motor has a screw that is brass in color, flat and the head is about the size of a dime. This has a rubber grommet/washer that falls apart. This lets the motor move and pull away from the open and closing mechanism causing the machine gun sound. I tried the washer and it works kinda. The Roof opens and closes and the privacy screen opens and closes also. The issue is when closing the roof the motor still slips. This can cause the roof to open on one side and not the other causing a misalignment. I cant offer any advise except before trying the washer trick see if you can get the rubber grommet/washer from MB and replace that first. Also to do this you don't have to pull the sun visor or pillar trim. Good luck

Thanks for the write up -- great info. I've confirmed that the motor is moving down when closing the pano roof and causing the grinding noise; pushing the motor up helps fix the problem. The pano roof was misaligned and it was not fun aligning it back using the hand crank method.
Question, how are people getting to that third screw for the motor? I've got everything apart and that headliner would have to be bent at a pretty extreme angle to gain access with a torx-20 screwdriver.
It looks like you'd have to actually move the entire headliner back in order to pull away that section (which means pulling the covers for the mid pillar / seatbelt). Any thoughts?

Pull the #9 fuse in trunk for 2min and you can then get the shade closed. Work for me last night.
I got mine aligned but looks like it will have to replace the motor since I am getting the CLICK OF DEATH!!
