Franken Mufflers for your Beast?
So much discussion over the years about mufflers etc. for E55's I figured I would share my opinion on how to be loud as hell at wot outside and quiet in when cruising. My setup cost me about $700 total cat back and I would never pay more than a hundred bucks for muffler BTW. No offense to the 3k mufflers out there.
If you want ax murderer loud at WOT and tame at cruising for E55 w211. Keep all cats on car and in no particular order.
1. X-pipe with muffler delete
2. X-pipe with gutted AMG franken-muffler (open up muffler and replace all perforated pipe with "solid" pipe and leave all packing in muffler. When you gutt an amg muffler you should weld straight pipe in place of any perforated pipe and make sure you have a constant flow of solid pipe from in all the way out to a true dual exit to tips.
3. X-pipe with two after market 8x15 oval franken-mufflers with single in and dual out with aftermarket amg style larger meatier tips. (open up muffler and replace the perforated y pipe with a Y style exhaust connector pipe and leave all packing in muffler. Note:When you leave the packing in with solid pipe inside a muffler it will be quiet as the sound is essentially going straight through the muffler and loud out the back but no drone or cabin noise. When you remove packing and leave perforated pipe you are going to have a rattle can and that is not where you want all the noise. The most important thing is to have solid pipe inside the muffler - even without packing it will be fine…. I have #3 aftermarket setup on my car now (I have big flat black dual tips now - sig pic is old) When I cut open the ovals all the packing completely burnt out of the muffler already. The other muffler had about a small hand full left. I cannot tell you how happy I am with this setup. Unreal
Here is a vid of a e90 bmw m3 muffler being properly gutted., listen to the sound at the end of the vid….Any local socal guys want to meet up to hear my beast let me know.

All the hot rodders have been doing this mod way before the birth of the ZO6. I love 1963 to 1968 Vette's btw.
Incredible result for an M3
Means a lot coming from you. Not posting much these days but well aware of all your contributions-Thanks....A Shardul muffler with x pipe would be a really quick and affordable way to get some sound if you do not want to hack on a muffler. The e55 muffler is super quiet and is the obvious first step in getting sound people.
Yeah, I need to do this.
