Opening Day at the Dragstrip

Today was the first test-and-tune day at Woodburn and the turnout was good and the weather was perfect!

I finally got a chance to put the new shoes on the beast and bust out some runs with the Hoosiers. By the end of the day I had gained about 3-tenths of a second over my best time on street tires from last year.

Run #1:
60': 1.941
1/4 mi: 12.249
mph: 114.89

Run #2:
60': 1.850
1/4 mi: 12.142
mph: 114.69

Run #3:
60': 1.788
1/4 mi: 12.101
mph: 114.44

The car is stock and I launched it with TC off and got very little wheelspin. I just brought the RPMs up to 1000 while staged and smashed the gas pedal to the floor.

My 60' times and ET's got better as I lowered the pressure from 22psi on the first run to 17psi on the third, plus the brand new tires were getting broken-in, but I'm curious why the mph consistently went down. Any ideas? What are the best 60' times I can expect on a stock car with the Hoosiers?

I'm no drag expert, but MPH seems to go up when you have more wheelspin. Of course, the ET goes up as well.

I saw the photos you posted to Facebook, I'm excited to get my E63 out there! I'm an odd one though, I care more about trap speed than ET.

At what time during the day did you make each of your passes? Perhaps an increase in ambient temps caused the traps to decrease? Or maybe the lower tire pressure and resulting increase in rolling resistance may have caused it?

As your 60fts decrease and your ET decreases, it is not uncommon for your MPH to go down a tad. What I see on your slips in nothing unusual.

I would think as you lower tire pressure you gain traction but increase rolling resistance which would cause a lower top speed.

Are you staging shallow or deep? This will also have an effect on your E/T vs trap.

Any idea what your elevation is out there?

Nice runs though!

I stage as shallow as possible. The altitude in Woodburn is 197ft.

I may have asked you at C&C already and just don't remember, but is there a reason you like Woodburn more than PIR?

They both have their pros & cons.

PIR is nice because it's close (if you live in Portland), and they have 1/4 mile late night racing on Friday and Saturday all summer long. What I don't like about PIR is that when they run the points series on Wednesday evenings they only run 1/8th mile, plus I have to take half a day off work to get there in time to start eliminations. They also don't prep the track that much.

Woodburn is always 1/4 mile, their points series are on the weekend, plus they have occasional "Friday Night Fun Drags" for grudge racing. Their track prep is probably the best in the region (they run Top Alcohol dragsters there)

Either way, I'm always up for a day (or night) at the drags, so let me know if you plan on going to either.

I definitely want to go at some point! I hate running the 1/8 mile too, so I never go on Wednesday. I've only ever gone to the Friday or Saturday "Late Night Drags" at PIR (with my previous car), but I'd be up for taking a trip down to Woodburn, especially if their track is prepped better. I'll let you know when I have some time.

The tires are 255/50/16 Hoosier D.O.T Drag Radials mounted on factory CLK wheels that have been painted black and drilled for 14mm lug bolts. There are spacers, but I can't remember how thick they are. I'll check when I get home tonight and let you know.

Here's a picture of the Hoosiers in the trunk. One tire barely fits in the spare tire well, with the other on top. This leaves plenty of room for other raceday necessities like a floor jack, cooler, etc. Luckily these wheels are super lightweight so getting them in and out of the trunk is easy.

The spacers are 20mm thick and they require 14mm x 50mm lug bolts

Pretty sure you only need 5-10mm thick spacers to clear the brakes.

I'm running the Sportsman class at Woodburn Dragstrip and haven't missed a weekend yet! (No races this weekend though) It's taken a while, but I'm getting better at driving it consistently and predicting the ET based on DA and IAT.
