Dealer will probably charge you $700-800 My alternator Died last week my buddy who owns a shop charged me $200 and it took him almost 4 hours,

Just did mine in my driveway 2 weeks ago. Took about 3 hours, not too bad.

A CLS has more frame clearance and is easier to swap the alternator. I used to think that mechanically the W211/W219 chassis were identical. However a while back I was trying to diagnose an electrical problem and swapped the alternators between my E55 and CLS55. The E55 took way longer, iirc I was able to snake the alt. out of the CLS without removing the cooling fan assembly due to a larger space between the frame rails.
