My 55 is dying on me
Two weeks ago I drove my car for the first time in 7 weeks as I had been away. It drove the 22km (14miles) to work no dramas. On my way home car suddenly died about 3km short. I let it cool for about ten minutes and then it started and drove home.
My thoughts were CPS. So new genuine merc part was bought and fitted.
In the mean time cars been fine.
Two days ago I drove about 160km and as I arrived at my destination the car died. Literally as I pulled into the car park and put it in to park. Talk about good timing. About three hours later car started and I drove about another 200km no worries. Then yesterday I was doing the return, I drove 330km in about 34c heat, I was 35km from home and car died again.
Thoughts? I have new fuel pumps/filter/sending unit being replaced today/tomorrow as they are starting to crap it pretty well at this point. Fuel pump fuses are fine, I don't think it would be the CPS again as it is brand new.
Anything else I should look at before I venture out again? I was lucky as I essentially live in the desert and this is my only wheels. Thanks in advance!

have you checked fuel pressure when it's dead?? New CPS could have been bad but you said its OEM, usually the cheap ones are not worth buying....

I haven't, I have new pumps awaiting delivery (should be here today), so I'll wait till new ones go in. The driving I was doing was purely highway. Non stop trip no slow downs only stopped when I pulled over. When it died in the car park that was the first time the engine had been unloaded. Yesterday it died seemingly randomly.

I just went through a similar experience. Check the relay on the right-hand side of the trunk (driver-side British/Japanese, passenger-side American).

Note: my fuel pumps showed signs of over-current most likely caused by clogged fuel filter and/or fuel pump inlet screens. The new fuel sending unit (filter/regulator) requires an adapter cable. See this thread:

211-470-64-94 Fuel Pump Assembly (actually filter and regulator) requires 211-440-05-07 Cable Harness.
FWIW, the replacement for the early Fuel Pump Sending Unit may require an adaptor harness. Mine did not but yours might. I recommend seeing if you can get into the Electronic Parts Catalog.

Very thorough write up Mr. bbirdwell, thanks. My relay and fuses externally appear fine. Unlike your issue mine is occurring below 1/2 tank of fuel and I'm leaning toward it being a fuel pump temperature issue due to the clogging of my filter. Which is shown in the second link you have provided, first page. I checked yesterday and the leaking has most definitely increased. The pumps can not arrive soon enough. I will also, as due care, replace the relay as I wouldn't be surprised if 11 years of ownership and being in the heat of Darwin has not shortened its serviceability somewhat.

Its the fuel pump relay that's on the right rear wheel house behind the airmatic reservoir tank.
It won't throw a code and it will always restart after a few mins.
