Is this some sort of a MB joke - supercharged AMG package, but no TPMS sensors?
Tire went flat on the freeway, not a single light came up

I've just come to consider it something that was still fairly new in 04 so they just offered it as an option.
The lack of spare tire is kind of weird though, maybe for weight purposes?

my 01 BMW has TPMS - uses wheel speed sensors to detect if one is spinning out of sync with the others, works pretty good too
and yes, no spare either

My '05 doesn't have TPMS but thank god it had a donut in the trunk... I wonder how much it would cost to have a TPMS system installed on our cars..
Oh and, if you don't have a spare I highly recommend you invest in run flat tires for the time being.

Adding tpms might be pretty expensive and a lot of work. There's tons of aftermarket tpms kits, all you need is somewhere to hide the small tire pressure displays.
I have TPMS on my 2004.
I think the lack of a spare tire was because some cars had run flats from the factory?
I have the full size inflatable spare, which is nice since you don't need to worry about it's air pressure.

I've retrofitted TPMS to my car. It is a real pain in the butt to route the wiring, I scavenged from European cars for antennas and controller box. Then bought Dorman TPMS sensors and programmed them myself ... works great. Definitely need a DAS to code.

It would be really nice to do this the OEM way. Not sure if I want to put additional displays in the beautiful interior...

You need to run a wiring harness from the left side rear SAM (in the trunk) forward inside the car and behind the dashboard then back around in a loop and fish the connectors through each wheel well. The antennas connect to those. There is also a small controller that needs to be purchased which connects into the harness close to the SAM. It is quite a pain to do this .. but I have had the interior in and out of the car several times that it didn't take as long as it might have otherwise.
I did try to cheat by leaving the wiring and the antennas in the trunk. SLKs have just one antenna in the trunk, but on ours, the front TPMS cannot be detected with the antennas in the trunk.
I may have some old pics somewhere of the wiring. Ugh ..
