Split intercooler circuit: BMW reservoir capacity?

I was checking my fluids today and I popped off the cover to the reservoir (Mine is hooked to one of the BMW transmission reservoirs) and it was completely empty. This was while the car is totally cold. Should there be coolant in here when cold or is it just an expansion tank? How full should it be?

Thanks!

Fill it up halfway. It probably blew out coolant under pressure or it evaporated. I sealed up the vent hole on my reservoir and then installed a grease pressure valve (only a few bucks), and then the reservoir behaves exactly how it should.

The cobra reservoir doesn't looks that good, and it's barb placement are not ideal either, but it does have a pressurized radiator cap which is what the BMW reservoir does not have.
