Power Steering Pump DIY?

My pump is on the fritz and I have a new one, with the reservoir and gasket, but I'm feeling lazy. How hard is the job of replacing the pump? I may do it tomorrow so I can go racing on Sunday, or I may just leave it alone and have my mechanic do it next week.

Can it be done in less than 2 hours if it's my first time doing it?

Hey Joe, did you end up installing the pump yourself, or did your mechanic install for you?
I'm in the same boat, pump is going bad. I was quoted 800-1000 to swap for a new pump.
Can anyone chim in on this topic?

I had my mechanic do it while he was installing a driveshaft loop. I think the book said the pump was a three hour job.

I called my mechanic and was quoted 3 hours of labor also. Sending you a pm with a question.

You guys tackle this DIY yet? My pump is starting to whine on me so I know its up for replacement in the not so distant future. Indy quoted me around $600 but curious how much work it is to do yourself. I changed the pump in my wife's older W163 ML and was pretty straightforward, but looks like there may be less room in our engine compartment.

Appreciate it, thanks! Seems very similar to the replacement on the W163 ML platform, albeit with a little less room to work with.

Just a quick question.. is it possible for the power steering pump to make a whistling/slight belt noise if its going out? Most prominent over 25 mph coasting. does not make the noise when revving the engine parked... only while driving.

PS pump dying to my understanding will whine more and more and groan heavily under load... I would assume it becomes a shriek as the internals roast itself...never waited that long though.

Check for wear or rub, I found an AC line rubbing the PS drive pulley.

Noise should generally be louder as you strain the motor turning the wheels at a stop idling.

Mine is going out slowly, but hey that means I get to clean all the crud off the motor from where the previous owner never redid the breather cover gaskets

Hey guys, I had to replace the PS pump and reservoir on my 99 ML320 (338K miles and still going strong). Parts are easy to find at reasonable prices. If you're a good DIY wrench then it shouldn't be too difficult. I did mine, along with alternator and belts, as well as replaced the square rubber "O-ring" (driver side front of engine below oil filter housing) all in a couple hours total. Its straight forward procedure and IMHO you don't need to spend hundreds on labor (unless you don't have time, tools or like to get your hands dirty). Use genuine parts as they all fit properly the first time and you it should be an easy/moderate job for the average DIY mechanic. TIP: bleed the air from PS while truck is still on jack stands (turn side to side a half dozen times then top up the PS res.)

It seems like I need my PS pump replaced. My car makes a whistling/belt noise when making sharp turn. The noise was so loud this morning that I had to stop the car, turn the wheels all the way to the left and right a few times. Every time it reached the end right/left, the noise was louder. After that, I started to drive again and noise was gone or may be softer. Definitely PS pump problem, right? By the way, yourmechanic . com offers mobile services, has anyone experienced with this kind of service? Thanks guys.

Low PS fluid causing the noise. I refilled it and the noise goes away. Will try a few more sharp turns at faster speed tomorrow to see if the noise is still there. I will monitor the fluid level, if it gets low again, may be there is a leak? Is it safe to say that there is no need to replace PS pump???

I can see the fluid on the plastic tray and the hose, it's either pressure hose or fluid reservoir leak. Since I can see the fluid on the hose, it's probable the pressure hose leak. Anyone know how much does cost?
