I know that assumption is the mother of all ***k-ups, but may I assume you have all replaced the standard factory left side intake tube (which incorporates about a 50% reduction in diameter) with an unrestricted right side tube? Made a big difference for me. I think it was $12 at the time.

95one - Keep pushing.

Yes, I do see some form of resistance here. It is being described as "people have already tried this" but sometimes I don't think that is where the emotion comes from.

This is a 13 year old car now. People are buying perfectly serviceable ones for 10-12k. We are in the land, not of carbon fiber foo-foo - but of "I built this in my garage and it works great"

On a concept level, this will cause people to see a changing or even revolution in process and product on the tuning for these cars.

Some may get angry.

The stock air box system, while it work for stock usage, was mostly made for sound attenuation. Sure - it flows air - but not in a manner that is made for best flow - it is in a manner based on sound, secondly for best flow.

Also, the fact that I know you will share your finding freely, which is **sorely** lacking in this community, is a great thing. Same stuff I am trying to do with my thread. Lots of pics, links, and info. No more of this "I did this awesome thing" (Read: I paid someone to do it) and you see one pic of an engine on a stand and a dyno...

This place is a joke.
My car gained, possibly, 6 rwhp with the Needswing intake over the stock airbox and filters on Dynojet. It was not my intake so I put the stock one back on. Later, when I installed the 82mm throttle body I fabricated a new y-inlet from aluminum tube as the plastic one for the stock 80mm (2007 SL55) looked restrictive. I also added 1/2" spacers to the stock air boxes (in between the two halves) to allow the filters to sit higher off the bottom, allowing more air inside, similar to how the 6.3 filters clear the bottom on the stock 6.3 intake.

Great thread. Hopefully not out of line asking this question; Do any of you run a VRP intake (aluminum)? I just got my car back tonight with the new mods. The intake tubes were HOT to the touch. They look bad azz but the heat (air temp) can't be good going in the motor and I don't recall the stock airbox being even warm not to mention hot.

How hot? I would guess if a frying pan was as hot as my intake tubes it would slow fry an egg...

Physics 101. Air molecules, as you all know, are spread far apart and do not transfer heat that well. In fact, air is a fantastic insulator. Thermal air gapping is used to insulate multiple fascists of industrial manufacturing, oil/gas industries and home/building construction. My point? There is a small layer of air that is insulating the moving air. At idle, of course, air is moving quite slow and will allow some heat transfer saturation. AKA...heat soak.

As long as the intake air is cooler than the engine heat surrounding the intake system, you're good.

that flex tubing looks like it would create a lot of air turbulence...

Just wondering why nobody runs one large 4.5" tube to a big air filter and make a simple heat shield. I know the dual looks good. But, smooth airflow and larger surface area is all you need. That y pipe is a restriction.

Because there is no room for a 3.5" let alone a 4.5". The space right behind the throttle body is ridiculously tight. It's even worse with an aftermarket 82mm tb that uses a 1/2" spacer that takes up even more much needed real estate. I could pro ably fit a ni e 3" mandrel bend. But I could not get a 3.5" to fit. I tried this. I tried exactly what you just suggested. Just not any room for it

Your assumption is incorrect. The amount of force that the air will be entering the enclosed (ram) intake would well surpass any turbulence the tubing would create. Then again, attempting to smooth the air flow before it slams into the air filters would be futile. You need the air smooth as possible going into the engine.......AFTER the filters.

I think you can fit a 4" and taper the inlet down to the desired size of throttle body and slowly go bigger till the actual filter. No?

Did you dyno before you made it? Dyno after if you did. I'm still waiting on Denrol to chime in here, because all of these are looking like his set up. - I'm not actually sure it's his original design. - Fab tech?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/CLS-55-AMG-M...FWLETi&vxp=mtr

I have made a couple "T" pieces that I am anxious to try. I will be trying a few "different" designs. They will probably work fantastically or fail in the same manner. Hopefully the dyno with be available this weekend to test out. The ambient temps will be close to 10 deg. F higher than the last test.

Final fitment

Before dyno was without the 90mm TB. Before 420kw and after 464kw. Im assuming the previous tune was not to its full potential hence the huge increase

Shirvaan damn brother man, what have you done to your car with mods to create an extra 114kw and I am presuming that's power at the crank. Just seems an extremely high number. Can you make up another intake system like that? Hehe

It's all the supporting mods on a rather stingy dyno 😁

I think we can still squeeze out more power with another tune

The intake was once off which was a ***** to make . 88mm/3.5 inch piping

Mods are:
77mm sc pulley
172mm crank pulley
Injectors
Intake spacers
Headers
Full exhaust no cats
Trunk tank
Heat exchanger
50:50 ethanol mix
90mm tb
Custom intake with heat resistant coating
Meth kit not connected yet
