Fuel pump relay melted

I've had a rather unpleasant experience today as my car broke down in the middle of nowhere. The engine just died and I've narrowed it down to the fuel pump not working.

Was towed back home and started taking the trunk apart when I came across a melted fuel pump relay. Now I am really confused, apparently the part number for the fuel pump relay is: 0025427219 , but the part number for the fuel pump relay that I've got is 899886000 - which is green instead of black and has round pins?

After some googling I've found that this was apparently used in older MB models up to like 2001. Now I'm wondering, what the hell is that thing doing in my car?

I am now trying to figure out, do I order the one that is supposed to be in my car (0025427219) or the one that was in my car (899886000)?

And further, does anyone know the part numbers for the socket where the relay inserts into, as that thing is completely melted together with the relay and it doesn't look like I'll just be able to replace the relay.

Thanks.

Sorry, you're absolutely right.

Pictures added - That's passenger side (for me driver side RHD) in the trunk, for some reason I am also missing another relay and 2 fuse holders as can be seen here (picture in the link is not my car, picture of the same location in my car is the first picture added in this post): https://mbworld.org/forums/attachmen...-air-pumps.jpg

Note, there was a 30A fuse inserted into the relay which together looked like this: https://shop.euroimpex.lt/product_im...1597.jpg?big=1 - I have taken that one out (it was burnt)

VIN: WDB2110762A424718

Lots of posts on this failure mode back in the summer of 2015. Search on fuel pumps, fuel filters, fuel pump relays.

https://mbworld.org/forums/mercedes-...ml#post6495500

This has a list of cross-referenced relays. The MB part number is the latest relay number in the electronic parts catalog as of summer 2015. You should also look at replacing the fuel filter and pumps at the same time.

FWIW, the current draw on my fuel pumps is 13.5 amps each for a total of 27 amps being pulled through a relay rated for 40 amps.

Thanks for your reply, I have looked at most of those topics (including yours) before I started this thread. Reason for starting my own topic is that the relay itself looks completely different (FWIW it seems to be an ancient part) than the one in your thread (as you can see in my pictures).

So I am at a bit of a loss here if I should just replace the relay and socket with the one referenced in your thread or not? One issue with that approach is I do not have a place to put in another 30A fuse for the relay (the one that you have right above your relay).

MB 002-542-72-19 is the relay part number for your VIN in the current electronic parts catalog. You're looking at needing the following in the attachments depending upon what work you perform.

I highly recommend a subscription to the EPC. I'm about to renew mine as I find it very useful.

The E55 has undergone multiple harness revisions. I have no idea how Mercedes names their harness revisions. I labeled the below as Revisions to help delineate the differences.
-Rev - up to 3/20/2003
-Rev A 3/21/2003 to 8/31/2003
-Rev B 9/1/2003 to 5/31/2005
-Rev C as of 6-1-2005

You may have to perform a custom wire harness for that portion of the fuel circuit.

Edit: FWIW, the second relay (for the air pump) you cannot find in the trunk is located under the hood at the cabin air filter over the auxiliary battery. That second relay was moved to the trunk sometime in one of the above revisions.

Thanks, this is most helpful. I would have preferred avoiding getting the car towed to the dealer but I guess there's no way around it since those replacement parts seem to be incompatible with my harness. Bummer.

Wow so you have a super early model as your VIN is indicating it's a 2002 w211. You obviously have some sort of pre production or early production part in there or someone converted it over at some point. Looks like someone wrote with a marker on the relay? Does it say K16/39?

Ok so someone definitely modified this at some point and it even seems the date code on the relay is within the last few years. That part number translates to 0015429619 and was used on 201, 124, 202, 129 models so someone probably just took the parts from one of those cars. The relay you need is 0025427219 and the corresponding connection housing for it is 0075459226
