What's this metal mesh covered round opening next to the steering column?

Does anyone know the purpose of that on the wood trim next to the steering column at the right lower hand side of OP's opening photo on the following thread? I have heard "microphone" and "ambient temperature sensor" so far.

It for the Auto HVAC control. It checks the temp near you. It is one of the sensors that determines how much to heat or cool the cabin. I think there is a sunlight sensor in the dash too.
