Can i buy an extra ECU for a tune?
I'm thinking to buy an extra ECU and have it tuned/installed leaving the original available for if/when it needs to go to the dealer. Will this guarantee my warranty won't be void? this will also eliminate the needs for a refresh should the dealer need to reset the ECU. Does any of this make sense to anyone else or am I overlooking something?

That is a interesting thought and a great question. I was reading on the forum that if Mercedes/AMG can trace the digital residue somehow. Would be interesting the see the comments from the experts here. Good luck.

From previous platforms, ECUs have always been vin coded so you can't use one from another car. However, you can have multiple ECUs coded to your vehicle.

2014 E63S; AMS 100 octane ecu tune; edok tcu tune; BB intakes; dyno tuned
Is a great question, and it has been discussed before about a year ago and perhaps even before then, and the final conclusion was that the dealer has to be involved to code the ECU in the proper way

There are quite a few used ECUs on car-part. I bought a second ECU for 110 GEM Octane Fuel. I bought it used for 250USD for my 2012 CLS63 AMG. if you buy it used just send both ECUs to your tuner and they will make a clone. well at least Kleemann can do )

I highly doubt you bought a used ECU for $250 and am even more skeptical Kleemann was able to erase the old vin coding and rewrite it with yours.

dealership will only sell you a new ecu if your current one is bad. Car has to be present at the dealer and dealer has to confirm ecu is faulty before ordering one. No legal way around this.

Didn't know a used ECU was so cheap, but if your going with a tune. Go with a reputable tuner. If something goes wrong, you can ask them to fix or face the consequences. In Asia, when you buy something, it's yours for life. No returns. In good old us of a, anything is possible. I know it sounds I sound I trust Renntech, but I do.

I would think if a Merceded ECU was bad, Mercedes verified bad that they replace it for free? Warrantee or not. Just saying.

Well, there are ways around this as I know you know but you need to have the right guy at the dealership. There are enough of us with second ECUs to know it's possible.

Are you sure you can get a second ECU form the dealer for a 2012 and up MB? I have tried multiple sources from SA, parts guys, shop foreman etc
ME28 can be recoded. The E63TT have a tamper proof case hence they have to be drilled in order to load the eprom file on it via direct pin contact on the PCB

FYI I was approached by a tuner(one of the top 5 for our cars)and was offered an ECU to use as the "tuned" ECU keeping my original one as is for future warranty issues should the need arise. i'm hoping to hear back from them with a price and if it makes sense thats the route i'll be taking. I'm assuming if this tuner can do it than theres no need for the dealer. I'll update as things progress.

You can have two ecus programmed to one car. I can clone the ecu. The dealer won't do any work on a used ecu. They don't have knowledge to do stuff like this. Even if you get a new ecu, the way the dealers work is transfer the info from old ecu to new one but this deletes the old ecu. For all this to happen you have to clear the used ecu fist, before you tie it to your car and vin. The only way to clear the used ecu is to put it in bootmode which can only be done by taking the ecu apart. There is also another way to do it, without opening it up. But to do this i will need both of your ecus, used one and the one that is tied to the car. I must say again i have never heard of anyone do such things on m157 platform ecus. I have done it to 7 cars, all of them run tune and have stock ecu for backup in case of warranty.

GAD was got me a 2nd ECU and programmed it to work in my car. They gave me 2 dyno sheets, one for each ECU. The factory ECU has conservatve tune, the 2nd has race tune.

I have 2 ECU's , all that needs to be done is to clone your existing ECU onto the new one...
best way to buy an ecu is on ebay. Take off your ECU and look up the serial code on the bottom of it...type that into ebay and buy an used ecu..ship it to ur tuner and enjoy your tune
