out of warranty - need a new battery
one month out of the original warranty has expired (I have the year of extended warranty) my battery is starting to fail to hold a charge.
I'm told that the extended warranty doesn't cover batteries.
has anyone received a free battery after the first warranty period expired?
suggested options?

Go buy a new AGM battery from Advance Auto, Autozone or O'Rielly Auto parts. Any of these will install it free.

no issue saving money at Advance Auto (battery is listed at $178. But what concerns me is the car losing codes when the battery is pulled. Don't you need continuous juice to have the radio to operate and once you pull the battery, you need codes to have everything operate properly? If not, I'll have them install the battery.

The battery in my E500 is in the trunk and that was the one I was using as an example.

Just a tip for you, if you want the original MB battery call road side assistance when they show up for battery issues they carries new batteries they can sell you one for better price and no cost for installation, they know how to do it and you will save service dealer fees. I believe this still work.

Walmart has an AGM battery for these cars, currently out of stock though. Advance auto parts has a good warranty on the batteries, they usually have coupon codes too that you can use online to buy the battery and pickup in store. As for keeping the power, pep boys still seems to have the 9v battery cigarette lighter adapter in stock to keep the power while everyone else seems to have discontinued it. You could make one fairly easily too. But doesn't that cause a problem when replacing the battery as everything is live?
