Any consensus on stock E63 wheels?

Hey guys,

I have a dumb question - what stock wheels are popular and which ones are not? So the car I'm buying has the wheels on the right in the picture below, but I actually really like the wheels on the left.

Am I normal or weird? I.e- what's the chance I can get a deal on the left ones and sell mine to not lose money?

Am I making a mistake doing this? i.e- the rest of the world prefers mine etc. Just curious what the group think is here

It's not a mistake if it's what you like. Who cares about anyone else when it's your car!

Ones on the left I think are forged so much lighter/stronger. That's a good reason to choose them.

the rims on the left are in fact from an e63 with Performance Package. Not sure about weight difference. If they are lighter, then I think you'd be down grading although I do in fact like the look of the 10 spoke (as you do).

Trying not to loose money on a rim swap takes time patience and luck. Not to mention, dealing with tires; are the ones your swapping with new, used, what brad, what size? Lots of little variables. wouldn't be worth my energy. Just my .02.

Good luck

I have 10 Spoke love them hard to clean

I like both....but would trade for non-stock wheels...
once you have the car, you will like the wheels cause you will love the car..

Your wheels were 'standard' while the black wheels and the 5-spoke were extra cost options.

Hope you find someone to do an even swap with you.

Aha! I probably used "swap" too liberally. Usually what I do is buy new wheels and then sell my old ones. Just wanted to get a rough idea for the delta involved.

I have a history of liking non-popular wheels quite often...but I guess not this time. oh well. It's just money right?

Using the MBUSA configuration tool, the 5-spoke forged wheels are a $500 option and the black 10-spokes are an additional $1,700.

Have you considered aftermarket?

My problem is that I don't really trust aftermarket cast options (especially anything replica), and forged are a pretty penny usually. I'd rather spend money on going fast I guess and I'm not convinced wheels will matter in a non track situation. Yes yes, unsprung weight etc, but come on...this isn't a GT3.

Seriously though, go on baidu and go check out what you can buy a lot of 100 wheels for. I remember seeing some Porsche 991 replica wheels from baidu for like 50 a piece if you bought a large enough quantity. Scared me enough to stay away from cast wheels from non-proven names.

Another thing to keep in mind is if you have the MBUSA wheel and tire insurance that it will cover any OEM wheels you have. So if you have a winter and summer set all are covered. I originally wanted a set of the black 10 spokes, but for under $800 you can have a really good wheel shop turn them into whatever you want.

You have them backwards. The window sticker here shows the 5-spoke forged as $1,700. The 2nd window shows the 10-spoke in black as a $500 option. The silver color 10-spoke wheel was standard, but there was the additional option of painted in black or grey for $500.

Uhh yeah that's why you don't buy replica wheels. What do you expect from a wheel that costs $50/100 per wheel? LOL.

There are plenty of reputable cast wheel companies out there, AG/Vossen/Niche/Rohana etc. that make good looking wheels that will be reliable. I had a set of Vossens on my S4 that lasted longer than I had the car, while my 3 piece forged HRE wheels bent. Or you can get a Flow form forged wheel thats stronger and lighter than cast, but not much more expensive.

Makes sense what you are saying (and the accompanying window stickers). Perhaps MBUSA has it wrong:

I had forgestars on the car I just sold, so I at least bought into the hype once on the flow form forged.

I think it's really funny that the options packages from the window sticker above are different than the current E63 configurator at MB! I'm also shocked that they want 1800 bucks for essentially black paint. I had a set of wheels on my SUV done for 150 a wheel, which is probably overpriced! 1800 is just robbin' you blind.
