2014 cls63 amg s model...In the snow?

Ok, Here goes. Getting the bug, want a second car as daily driver (2013ml550, love the 4.6tt) and unfortunately Live in Northeast with yes a bunch of snow and drive 40-50k miles per year.... Since the new Smodel gives a 66.6-33.3 rear wheel to front wheel all wheel power ratio, Has anybody decided to drive theirs in the snow. How did it perform? For me, Obviously first move for me would be winter tires and rims as well as eco mode(or a lot of fun in the parking lots ).....Bottom line is it completely impractical or actually feasible? and no Im not talking about why would anyone drive a 100k+ car in the winter......we did it for many years in the S class before we had 4matic and just threw snow tires on it (yeah I know, not pushing 577hp)...so anyone have any experience on this yet or heard anything on tests with it? I want my cake and eat it to, looks, performance, comfort, style.......oh yeah, totally a company car by the way so why not?????? At least I have a couple months to decide, now that the facelift is ready for 2015 model, Im interested or do I just go for the s coupe 4matic when that drops? 1st world problems

impossible in the snow. sux even when the streets are cleared and there is only patchiness of snow and ice remaining. i didn't throw winter wheels or tyres on it though - as i have another 4-matic for the winter. but i wanted to try it out in the winter just for fun with the summer performance tyres it came with when delivered. it sux. cant speak for how it goes with winter shoes installed. but i can tell you - it will not get you anywhere (except in trouble) if you try to drive it in the winter with the summer rubber.

literally drive mine everywhere, have the S model with 577 hp. all you have to do is throw a set of sotto zero serie II and this car will drive like a dream in the snow! normal 4matic has a 45/55 power difference and that can vary, where as the AMG has a fixed 33/67. With the sotto's on this car(E63) drives like the regular 4matic set up!

I totally agree with ajm, had this car out the first time it snowed with the summer conti's on, and i was sliding everywhere! The sotto's are the game changers!

I have a RWD with LSD and a set of sottozero, 255 on 4 wheels. Need to be driven in C mode in the snow. Get decent traction, actually better than the average car on the street which runs on all-season tires in this cold and snowy winter here in Toronto. And it's definitely better than my previous C63 and BMW 550 (both RWD but no LSD). With the new AWD, it should be even better.

dude. you cant assess based on summer tires. you could have twelve wheel drive and it will suck in the snow unless you have winter tires.

even all season tires are useless in the snow with AWD.

not to mention the high performance summer tires that comes on the cls.

dude. of course you can assess on summer tyres. you can assess on no tyres if you want to do so. if you read my post carefully - you will see that i was just testing the car with the rubber on which it came. everyone knows you need winter rubber to get proper traction. i was just providing one data point from one extreme point of view in an attempt to help the original poster answer his question.

Few days ago when we had a blizzard in chicago I felt like a badass being able to drive without a problem in it on my Range. Until this thing passed by:

And than saw this guy the day after. I don't know how he managed this. The roads were cleared and I was driving my CLS with R888's on it.

assess on no tires eh? give that a try and get back to me.

regardless, how was your post helpful in any way, if you and the op BOTH admit that you obviously need winter tires for winter?

YET, your entire answer was still based on the the cls being usless in winter with summer tires. leaving your response completley and totally pointless.

while winter tires are clearly superior to all season tires in the snow, top performing All seasons like the Conti DWS and Michelin Primacy MXV4 are very good with 4matic in the snow.

Summer tires though make for a challenge.

That '14 E63 stuck on the snow sure was a sore sight. With it having 4matic, the owner must have thought he/she owned the road. But it ain't so without proper tires. I wonder if it had winter tires when that happened. Maybe not since it looked like it has the new forged AMG rims.

Wow, how did you manage to capture that many E63's in such a short period of time? I only managed to see them twice around Chicago in the past 5 years. But at the same time I didn't live in Chicago, but close by on the Indiana side.

The black one was captured by somebody else. However I do see them downtown every now and than.

Drive my CLS63 AMG through the winter, but P-Zeros on four wheels is a must.

2014 CLS 63 S AMG / 2004 E55 AMG
I have Continental DSW 06 all seasons on my 2014 cls63 s and it drives really great in the snow. The other day I had it out with 1-2 inches of unplowed snow/slush/ice and the car just ate it up with confidence.

... the tires are also great in the summer, for what it's worth.

I run Continental DWS06 on mine year round in the PNW. It does very well in snow and offers good performance in the summer. It could be an option if you want to use an allseason tyre year around.

2015 CLS63 AMG S-Model
Picked up my 15 CLS63 S-AMG in October... Had a couple months with the summers, before putting on the P-zeros...

Drove it all winter here in Calgary, Alberta (Canada)... Did a few road trips to other cities in bad conditions...

This sucker is invincible... Literally, care free driving, no concerns, except rocks flying up from other vehicles...

For a slightly different perspective... my RWD '13 CLS63 with winter tires handles at least as good as any FWD vehicle I've driven, but the CLS63 gives you a predictable slide (that I actually prefer) if that makes sense.
