Mercedes-Benz C-Class and C-Class AMG: COMAND System Common Issues

Learn how to deal with the most common issues related to the COMAND system in your C-Class or C-Class AMG.

By Charlie Gaston - May 19, 2015

This article applies to the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and C-Class AMG (2007-2014).

The Mercedes-Benz is equipped with a COMAND system that offers the ability to control your navigation system, radio, telephone and address book function, DVD video, and system settings using a centrally located control knob. The COMAND system is easy to navigate, and jumping between menus is as simple as rotating the controller up or down, left or right, or in a circle. Owners have reported some problems with the COMAND system. Some of these problems will require a full repair, while others will require only a replacement part. Let's get started!

Common Issues with COMAND

Faulty Control Knob

The COMAND central controller works similarly to a computer mouse, allowing you to control command functions, menu features and selections. It works in conjunction with the screen in your dashboard and rotates, slides up and down, and moves to the left and right. The controller could become faulty after several years, in which case it would need to be replaced at a cost of approximately $210 including parts and shipping. If you have the repair done at a your local dealer, your cost could soar to as high as $330 plus labor and tax. The controller is covered under your warranty.

Command Unit Does Not Turn On

The number one symptom of a faulty or malfunctioning COMAND system is nothing registering on the screen. In other words, the screen is "dead," and there is no radio or satellite navigation functionality. Check that power is going to the unit (i.e., battery is not dead) and none of your fuses have blown. If neither solution works, then you most likely have a malfunctioning system that needs to be replaced. Visit your local dealer for a replacement. Professional costs should range between $550 and $950.

COMAND Screen Shuts Off Automatically

When updating map software, the COMAND system may shut off occasionally to protect the battery. Keeping the engine running, restart the update to continue the process as normal. If your COMAND system repeatedly shuts off or freezes after this, check your fuses.

Your next line of action would be to visit your local Mercedes-Benz dealer to have your COMAND system inspected. There could be an electrical problem, or you could have a faulty navigation system. If your vehicle is still under warranty, the dealer will complete any needed repairs at no cost to you.

Warranty

The COMAND system is covered under your 36-month warranty.

Common Questions

Is it safe to make DIY repairs to my COMAND system?

COMAND is a laser product that should not be opened. Opening the casing could expose you to invisible laser radiation. Visit your local dealer or a qualified technician for repairs to your COMAND system. However, the controller can be replaced without the help of a qualified technician.

Is it safe to carry out COMAND functions while driving?

It is recommended that you avoid using COMAND functions while in motion. Loading or ejecting a CD/DVD disc while driving could be a bigger distraction than you think.

Does the COMAND system play Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) radio?

Yes! If DAB shows as "not installed," you'll need to have its software calibration number (SCN) coded to your vehicle. Contact your local Mercedes-Benz dealer for the repair. As well, make sure your fiber connection is properly installed.

Common Issues

Not all CD/DVD discs play

Discs with copyright protection may not play. You may also experience problems when playing copied discs.

Reduced audio quality based on passenger location

Unfortunately, the design of the passenger compartment does not allow for an optimum listening experience for all passengers. Make adjustments to the volume of your audio functions as needed to accommodate all of your passengers.

Rear camera image may appear shaky

Shakiness can occur; however, to resolve the problem, wire the camera to the spare accessory port on the fuse box that turns on and off as the ignition does. Make sure to speak to your dealer before making this repair. Doing so could void aspects of your warranty.
