Mercedes Vision EQS Ready for World Debut at Frankfurt Motor Show
Vision EQS design study presents an electric luxury sedan ready for a more sustainable future with comfort, tech and stunning looks.
Mercedes-Benz is diving headlong into the electrification of driving with gusto. Aside from the introduction of electric turbos into its gasoline-powered lineup, it’s also introduced its first-ever, all-electric class, dubbed EQ. The first model from the new addition to the portfolio, the EQC compact SUV, is already heading off to showrooms for new homes, with nine more EQ models ready to do the same by 2022.
Yet, Mercedes cannot rest on its electric laurels; not when there’s a fully electric, sustainable future to consider. Thus, for the Frankfurt Motor Show in Frankfurt, Germany, September 12 – 22, Stuttgart will unveil its vision for such a future: the Vision EQS.
The EQS is Mercedes’ “milestone in a new era for the automobile,” as well as one outlook for the company’s future from the 2020s forward. The design study serves as the first signal towards its goal of having a carbon-neutral lineup within two decades.
The EQS’ design is anchored upon a stretched, bow-esque roofline, with a set of 24-inch wheels helping to give the sedan a more down-to-earth appearance. Additionally, the 229 LED bulbs making up the rear tail light is fully integrated into the sleek, two-tone body.
The high design continues with the interior of the EQS, which Mercedes says takes its cues from luxury yachts. It definitely feels like your sailing on the high seas while rolling down the highway, especially when seated upon the whitest seats around, diamond-quilted with rose gold stitching. And just to take the nautical theme to its conclusion, Mercedes says the headliner is made from recycled ocean plastic.
While the Mercedes may feel like a yacht on the inside, it moves like a juggernaut down the highway. Its electric motors make around 470 horsepower, and can move from zero to 62 mph in under 4.5 seconds. Range is 434 miles on a single charge, and can regain 80 percent of its power in 20 minutes when plugged into a 350 kW charger. The batteries themselves will be created in factories using renewables.
For Mercedes, the Vision EQS shows how the company will give its a customers a sedan “that meets their wishes in terms of comfort, design and technology,” combining all three aspects into a single luxury EV concept presenting a bright future to come.
