Stunning AMG Hammer Rendering Makes Us Yearn for Classic Performance

Hammer MK2

W124 E-Class AMG, aka The Hammer was one of the greatest performance cars ever made. This restomod version reminds us why.

In 1986, AMG planted a powerful V8 in an E-class coupe, which received worldwide fame under the nickname “The Hammer.” That car launched AMG into the limelight. Suddenly folks in the United States became familiar with a little German town called Affalterbach. The car had a massive wide body kit, and big power that pushed the car to 60 mph in about 5 seconds. It topped out at nearly 190 mph.

This car was running with Lamborghinis and Ferraris of the day. And it was not just the speed, but it was the look of the thing. The squared off front and rear, and big bulging fenders made the Hammer nickname more than appropriate. A lot of time has passed since. And AMG is moving towards electrification like everyone else. However, the prospect of a second-generation Hammer is too tempting to ignore.

Digital artist Shashank Das is among those of us that misses the original W124 AMG. As a result, he has given us the creation we see here. It is what he refers to as the Hammer “MK2” Concept Widebody Design. The car is a restomod take on the original design, and it looks freaking awesome. It is not all curves and swoops like a lot of modern cars today. It retains the original squared off looks and bulging fenders. Despite that, it clearly looks like something that was made today and not 35 years ago.

AMG Hammer

The car sits on a set of Rotiform KPS wheels wrapped with Toyo tires. Up front there is a set of custom LED headlamps. Out back the tail lamps look like the originals, just updated with modern technology. And of course, the whole thing is set off with a killer widebody kit.

If the original was called the Hammer then this restomod version can be called the Sledgehammer. It pays homage to the original car but looks like it has been hitting the gym for the last few decades. The car would look at home in a DTM race. Lines would be around the block to buy something like this if it were ever brought to life.

Sadly, we can’t buy this amazing car. However, it does take us back to a time when AMG was really special. A time before the AMG badge was slapped on everything from the smallest A-Class to the largest SUV. It was a time before all the electronic nannies and hybrid powertrains. The original Hammer was an extraordinary thing. It was fully of sound and fury and signified a hell of a lot.

We miss it dearly.

This new concept though takes us back. It reminds us that while today a stock Golf GTI can nearly keep up with the performance of the Hammer, it has no where near the cachet. If this rendering were to come to life and was available at your local Mercedes-Benz dealer, would you buy it? What do you think would be a fair asking price?
