One of just five produced, this very special 1988 Mercedes-Benz AMG Hammer coupe just reset the market.

Earlier this month, an ultra-rare, one-of-five 1988 Mercedes-Benz AMG Hammer coupe surfaced for sale at MB Market, where it was pretty obvious from the get-go that the final sales price for this iconic piece of machinery was going to surpass most people’s means by a long shot. After all, aside from its incredible rarity, this particular Hammer has just 19k original miles, and it might just be the nicest example left on the planet. Throw in the face that it has a truly fascinating history as a former DEA-owned vehicle and recently appeared in a VINWiki video, and it was no surprise that the car quickly surpassed the $300k mark. However, the final hammer price for this amazing Mercedes-Benz AMG Hammer was even more mind-boggling – an incredible $761,800.

While Mercedes produced around 30 Hammers for worldwide consumption, just 13 of them were delivered to North America, and only five were coupes like this one. Vehicles don’t get much rarer than that, but the iconic Hammer is much more than just a rare vehicle, as well as one that’s now highly coveted after years of remaining somewhat unappreciated in the world of collector cars.

After starting life as a regular old 300CE, AMG removed the stock 3.0-liter inline-six cylinder powerplant to make room for a 5.5-liter V8 that was bored out to displace an even 6.0 liters. The engine’s internals were balanced during this process, while the stock heads were converted from a single-cam, two-valve setup to a twin-cam, four-valve arrangement. The result was a very healthy for the era 385 horsepower and 417 pound-feet of torque – quite the upgrade over the original ratings of 185 horsepower and 192 pound-feet of torque.

Throw in a body kit and legendary AMG monoblock wheels, and it’s hard to imagine a more iconic Mercedes vehicle than the Hammer. But while we’ve always know that, thanks to this spotless example, it appears that the rest of the world is finally showing this special car the attention it deserves, too.
