G63 AMG and G550 Rank Among 12 Meanest Vehicles to Environment
The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) has released a list of 12 cars and trucks that are good at being bad for the environment. The list, titled “Meanest Vehicles for the Environment in 2014” uses something called a “Green Score” to measure a car’s or truck’s environmental friendliness. Factors such as tailpipe emissions and fuel economy affect a vehicle’s Green Score, which can range from 0 (mean) to 100 (green).
Two vehicles from Mercedes-Benz made the mean list. Coming in at sixth place was the G550.
The gas-gulping G-Class gets an EPA-estimated 12 mpg in the city, and 15 mpg on the highway. That significant gas thirst equals a Green Score of 22, but that low score is a small price to pay when you’re driving the coolest 5,578-pound rolling brick the roads have ever seen. For comparison purposes, an environmentally friendly car like the Toyota Prius C received a Green Score of 57.
The G63 AMG was ranked the fifth meanest vehicle for the environment. Thanks to its twin-turbocharged, 536-horsepower, 5.5-liter V8, the thirsty G63 gets 12 mpg in the city, and 14 mpg on the highway … hey, all that power has to be fueled somehow. The fast SUV’s penchant for dead dinosaur juice means it gets a Green Score of 21.
Ironically, the Smart ForTwo Electric Drive, a Daimler product, topped ACEEE’s Greenest Vehicles List. Its Green Score was 59.
