Pure Class Personified: 1953 Mercedes 300S

Mercedes 200S

Carmakers in the 1950s defined luxury very differently from today, as this gorgeous Mercedes 300S demonstrates.

Back in the ’50s, things were a little different in the automotive world. Curvy fenders and big bodies were the norm, and luxury meant something altogether different. Instead of mass-produced, high-tech, astonishingly fast rides, you got a car that was hand built and decidedly low tech. Luxury was more about quality construction and fine materials than the latest wiz-bang electronic gadgets. And cars like this 1953 Mercedes 300S, which we spotted at Classic Trader, ruled the luxury automobile market.

Technically, the Mercedes 300S was the brand’s two-door luxury sports tourer of the time. But it was also their most expensive and exclusive model, a pure pinnacle of M-B design. These were technological marvels in their heyday, sharing a number of components with the legendary 300SL Gullwing. The 300S share an engine, suspension, and chassis with that iconic model, yet it was wrapped in a more elegant package.

Today, few Mercedes 300S examples exist in anywhere near the condition of this blue beauty. This particular car originally sold in Italy and changed hands a few times before landing at a Belgium Mercedes dealership. The dealer sunk countless hours and dollars into restoring the car to better-than-new condition. They were careful to retain the car’s originality, right down to the blue metallic paint and underpinnings.

The result is a proper nod to a very different era of luxury. Not to mention one of the finest 1953 Mercedes 300S examples we’ve ever laid eyes on. It might not sport 600-plus horsepower, a high-definition digital gauge cluster, or the latest in tire technology. But this gorgeous vintage Mercedes has something no new car can lay claim to – pure, unadulterated class.
