2018 Mercedes-AMG E63 S Wants to Make Wagons Great Again

By -

Doug DeMuro takes a deep dive into a wagon that doubles as a 600 horsepower sports car, for better or worse.

Let’s face it, there’s a stigma with station wagons. The popularity of wagons has decreased quite a bit over the last few decades, with the rise of SUVs and minivans as the preferred mode of transportation for families. However, if you drop your kids off at school in the 2018 Mercedes-AMG E63S, you’re sure to turn quite a few heads.

The Mercedes-AMG E63S isn’t your typical station wagon. And who else to better describe just how amazing this vehicle is than Doug DeMuro. For those that don’t know DeMuro, he makes incredibly detailed review videos of all sorts of vehicles, sometimes to the point of madness. Just read the comments section, if you don’t believe us. Naturally, when he got his hands on the 2018 E63S, you could see the joy in his eyes. As DeMuro talks about in the video, the E63S is the perfect combination of performance and practicality, with a dash of extravagance.

First, DeMuro comes clean about any potential bias. Before he gets down to all the bells and whistles of the E63S, he has to admit that he currently owns a 2012 model of the very same wagon. This leads to a positively giddy DeMuro, who clearly wants to see what he’s missing, or possibly, not missing, with the new car. Judging by his excitement, you’d think he was reviewing a multi-million dollar exotic car. Even though this wagon isn’t what you’d expect a sports car to look like, don’t sleep on it. This E63 S is a beast, and worth every penny of the $120,000 price tag.

With 600-horsepower coming from a twin-turbocharged V8 under the hood, this isn’t your dad’s family truckster. No, this is every bit a sports car, just with a ridiculous amount of space in the rear, and the luxury you expect from a Mercedes-AMG vehicle. Seriously, you want to talk about luxury? How about turn signals that actually illuminate a very small Mercedes-Benz logo when activated? Yep, that’s included.

There’s also the two full LCD screens, one for the gauges and another for the infotainment system. If you want extravagance, the infotainment screen can be controlled by one of three, yes three, input methods in the vehicle. That’s the wheel in the center console, the trackpad right above the wheel, and of course, the little touch pad on the right side of the steering wheel. Combined with the ridiculous amount of luxury touches on the interior, you almost forget that this is basically a landspeed rocket.

2018 Mercedes AMG E63 S Meets Doug DeMuroReview

For those that are interested in taking the family to the racetrack, Mercedes has you covered. There’s actually a menu for racing. That means you can keep track of your lap times, quarter mile runs, and acceleration tests. All this and on the way home, you can get all the groceries and pick the kids up at soccer practice. Wow.

As you might imagine from the bias that DeMuro has for the E63, he liked the E63 S wagon. There were literal giggles as he drove the 2018 around a neighborhood. Oh, and the “Doug Score” for the E63 S wagon was off the charts. If you watch the entire video, you’ll be shocked at how badly you want a station wagon. Admittedly, it’s a special station wagon. There may just be a cross country trip to Wally World in your future.
