2019 Mercedes A-Class Is Certainly Cheap but Is It Good?

By -

YouTuber Doug DeMuro digs the stunning interior, fancy tech and bargain-basement price tag but what about performance?

The new Mercedes A-Class is a lot of things. For starters, it’s the smallest Mercedes you can currently buy in the U.S. It’s also the cheapest. Despite this, the compact sedan is rather handsome, quite roomy on the inside, and packed with some pretty fancy tech. So the only thing left to ponder is this – since automakers typically have to cut corners in built-to-a-price vehicles, what exactly is bad, if anything, about the new A-Class?

And quite honestly, there’s no better person on this planet to answer that question than immensely popular YouTuber Doug DeMuro. Here, we see DeMuro take his typical deep dive into the new A-Class. And right off the bat, DeMuro notes that even though it’s $700 cheaper (base MSRP) than the CLA, the A-Class already has 20 more horsepower and a much nicer interior out of the gate.

DeMuro admittedly wasn’t a huge fan of the CLA’s interior. But he points out that the A-Class is a much newer design. “Everything in this car is far nicer. There’s no crappy plastic in the center control stack, for example. Everything is vastly improved. The dashboard looks nicer, the materials they’ve used are far better. Right now, there’s no question this vehicle has the best interior in the entry level luxury car class.”

Tall praise, indeed. But DeMuro does skim over the exterior of the car, mostly because it isn’t anything that’ll set the world on fire. “The CLA is supposed to the sporty, exciting four-door car. This one doesn’t have that same sporty, thrilling look. Now, I don’t want you to think I’m calling this car ugly. It’s just sort of tame, docile, simple on the outside. It looks like a baby Mercedes-Benz.”

With that wrapped up, the only question left to ask is – how does the new A-Class drive? “It doesn’t have that sort of traditional old school Mercedes-Benz ultra luxury vibe to it,” DeMuro admits. “But Mercedes makes cars for people that actually buy them, and they find there to be a market segment here. I get the sense this car could be an all-star. I actually find this to be a pretty nice car. It’s a pretty good price, it’s got a ton of great tech, it’s got a great interior.”

Clearly, A-Class buyers aren’t sacrificing much for their monetary savings. So if you’re looking for a nice, comfortable Mercedes that won’t set you back a fortune, the new A-Class looks like a great bet.
