Watch 71-year Old Mom Tear Up Quarter-mile in AMG G63 & BMW M950i

By -

What happens when an auto journalist takes his mom to work? She drops the hammer down piloting a hi-po AMG and BMW.

We just love this clip by Carwow. Auto journalist Mat Watson is putting together two truly remarkable rides for a few drag races. The well-matched vehicles are a Mercedes-AMG G63 and a BMW M850i. Now, Mat has done this many times before. So how does he make the test a little more interesting? Put someone behind the wheel who is not a pro. And not just anyone, his dear old mum Sally.

It is a hilarious and very entertaining video, and it actually shows off the prowess of each vehicle very nicely. But above all else we learned a few things. First, don’t count out the 71-year old mom. She is a bit of a hellcat behind the wheel! We might have named this clip “Dragging Miss Daisy.”

“Do you know what we’re gonna do here, mom?” Mat asks Sally.

“We’re going to go very, very fast,” she answers. Mother knows best!

Mat gives his mom a little lowdown on the cars. First up, she is driving the AMG G63. Powered by AMG’s 4.0-liter, twin-turbo V8, the G-Wagon makes 585 horsepower. Comparing this to the BMW which produces 530 horsepower, but has the advantage of less weight. There is a hilarious exchange between the two about about what exactly torque is. No matter, Sally has this handled.

And they’re off! Sally drives really impressively, and her faces conveys that yes, she is laser focused!

The Mercedes is bested by the BMW, despite Sally’s best efforts.

Next, seeking redemption, she is driving the BMW. They take off and Sally simply crushes it!

She is pleased, and relieved that is was the G-Wagon weight and not her driving skills that lost the first face off. “I’m glad it wasn’t me, I’m glad it’s the car,” she explains to Mat. Mat is rightfully blown away by Sally’s performance.

Sally takes a break for a cuppa, and Mat goes over the stats. It turns out Sally was born to ride, in the BMW she took the quarter mile at 11.7 seconds! And despite it’s disadvantages in size and style, the Mercedes-AMG G63 still performs very nicely, hitting 12.3 seconds.

Next Sally does a rolling race. Behind the wheel of the G-Wagon she is certainly not afraid of a little speed. Although she gets a bit nervous in the braking. It’s a great exercise in showing the velocity and brake power, though clearly, Sally isn’t as confident on this one.

It’s a brilliant way to show off the vehicle capability, and a must-watch video! It also makes us think it is time for us to bring in our moms to work. Just, maybe no drifting.
