One of Mercedes’ classic models, the Mercedes-Benz B-Class is set to be replaced with a brand new model. Spy photo shows that this process is close to completion. Up till now, only a few details have been provided with regards to the vehicle’s architecture. As with the styling of the latest B-Class, spy photo show that the vehicle is obviously a five-door hatch, and the German automaker is planning to add a coupe and convertible model to the B-class line.

Hybrid models, probably similar to the B-Class F-Cell that was presented to the public last August is also anticipated to be included in the latest B-Class hatch’s engine options.

Jorg Prigl, Mercedes-Benz Head of development for the A and B-Class, spoke with the press at the recent Paris Auto Show and stated that the latest cars will be developed on the new and cutting edge Mercedes-Benz Front-drive Architecture (MFA).

According to Prigl, “We will start with the B-class and the MFA platform will contain an IP (intellectual property) solution that will allow us to produce both a direct, high-roof, high seating position replacement for the B-class.”  He also added that the make of the vehicle is so versatile that it can accommodate the installation of a battery pack, a fuel cell stack, hydrogen tanks and compressed natural gas tanks. This would allow the company to develop either and internal combustion or electrically driven vehicle, and also a few other body styles.

Daimler also announced last April that it has teamed up with the Renault-Nissan partnership, which allow the companies to share its expertise and engine options. A common design is also to be developed, to build a basis of the ForTwo replacement and the next-generation Twingo, where both models are set to be out in the market by 2013. The two vehicles will also be available in two and four seat models, manufatured on a rear wheel drive platform. Electric models are also expected to be added in both the car lines.

Other hybrid selections include the latest diesel hybrid technology set to be showcased in the 2011 Mercedes-Benz E300 BlueTEC, and the plug-in hybrid technology promoted in the Vision S500 concept at Frankfurt last 2009.
